Best film of the year and best sci-fi film in ages, in my opinion,” says one critic. “Gareth Edwards flips expectations really impressively for a visceral, touching, and creative story of humanity. Genuinely loved it. You have to see this one.”

Another critic writers, “Gareth Edwards doesn’t miss with The Creator. The movie takes place alongside Terminator 2, Alien, and Star Wars as absolute smashing examples of how sci-fi can parallel our world. It’s easily among the best films of the year.”

So, it sounds like The Creator will certainly be worth the price of admission when it hits theaters on September 29.

With discussions about the increasing use of AI technology having stepped up a gear recently, it is appropriate that 20th Century Studios have now released the trailer for upcoming movie The Creator, a sci-fi film that centers on humans attempting to kill an advanced AI being that has control of a weapon capable of destroying the world. Starring John David Washington, The Creator is the latest directorial effort from Rogue One helmer Gareth Edwards.

The subject of artificial intelligence is one that has been ingrained in the world of science fiction as far back as the genre has existed and The Creator is just the latest to depict what could happen if AI lives up to its name and proves to be more intelligent than its creators. When it comes to dealing with the topic of how humans and artificial intelligence can co-exist in the world, there has never been a more appropriate time for this kind of movie to be released.

Currently, AI use in movies and TV shows is just one of the reasons that Hollywood is now in the grip of both a writer’s and actor’s stike, as studios and the WGA/SAG-AFTRA clash over how the increased use of technology, including the potential AI scanning of actors, impacts the livelihood of many of those working in the industry. While The Creator is a completely fictional story, it is hard not to take it as another movie-based warning for the future.

The world of sci-fi movies is very rarely filled with alternate realities where everything is bright, happy and people just seem to get along with each other in harmony. Instead, cities are depicted as dangerous, over-crowded monstrosities or devastated wastelands, computers run amok, and humans are usually the underdog in their own story thanks to bad choices and made by those who should know better.

The Creator is no different in that respect, delivering what looks set to be an action-packed thriller that has seen comparisons to Blade Runner and District 9 being made following the first look at footage during this year’s CinemaCon event.

The plot leans into the idea of AI that was originally developed in order to protect humans decided that it would be happier if it was to destroy them instead, and Washington is a soldier caught in the middle of a desperate fight that he doesn’t know how to win when he discovers that The Creator is in the possession their “secret weapon” of a robot child.

The Creator marks Gareth Edwards’ first movie since his foray into the world of Star Wars with 2016’s Rogue One, and he has amassed a strong cast to bring something new to the tried and tested tale of the genre. Along with Washington, the movie features who will be joined by Gemma Chan (Eternals), Allison Janney (The West Wing), Ralph Ineson (The Green Knight), Ken Watanabe (Inception), Sturgill Simpson (The Hunt), and Marc Menchaca (Ozark).
