According to the official synopsis for The Book of Clarence, the movie follows “A down-on-his-luck man embarks on a misguided attempt to capitalize on the rise of celebrity and the influence of the Messiah for his own personal gain.”

Written and directed by Jeymes Samuel, The Book of Clarence has amassed a stellar cast for this unorthodox biblical tale. The Book of Clarence stars LaKeith Stanfield, Omar Sy, RJ Cyler, Benedict Cumberbatch, James McAvoy, Anna Diop, David Oyelowo, Alfre Woodard, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Caleb McLaughlin, Teyana Taylor, and Babs Olusanmokun.

The filmmaker has revealed some insight into the title character and how his lack of “outside faith” offers a new look into the biblical genre. “Clarence is a person that doesn’t believe in anything outside of what’s in front of him, what he can see and hear,” Samuel said. “Clarence has a lot of inside belief—he has a lot of inside confidence. This man is sure he could fly. He reminds me of me growing up, but unlike me, he has no outside faith. I think it’s just a really interesting vantage point to explore living in that particular time and place, where most everyone around him is speaking about the Messiah.”

Jeymes Samuel made his feature film directorial debut with 2021’s critically acclaimed Western, The Harder They Fall. The Book of Clarence sees the filmmaker reunite with Stanfield, whose character attempts to become one of the apostles. Ultimately, Samuel wanted to tell a story about the ordinary people living during the rise of the Messiah.

“I wanted to tell a Bible story about an everyman,” Samuel recently told Vanity Fair about the project. “I always wanted to explore the Bible stories, but from the angle of the person that sells Jesus his sandals, the woman or man that owns the hair salon.”

The Book of Clarence counts rapper, record producer, and entrepreneur Jay-Z among its producers, with the Grammy Award winner praising Samuel for finding new ways into old stories.

“Most of the stories told in the Old West didn’t include people of color. We know they existed. We know we’ve been here just as long as anyone else,” says Jay-Z, who produced the film and credits Samuel with “finding fresh ways and perspectives to talk about these stories.”

The Book of Clarence is scheduled to be released on January 12, 2024, by Sony Pictures Releasing.
