Based on the short story from King’s Night Shift story collection, The Boogeyman sets out to make you worry about what is lurking in the closet.
The first trailer for the new adaptation of Stephen King’s The Boogeyman has arrived, bringing with it a first look at the latest King offering to hit the big screen. Based on the short story of the same name from King’s Night Shift story collection, the film adapts the story’s basic premise and takes it in a different direction. The Boogeyman was initially planned to be released straight to streaming, but thanks to a series of impressive test screenings, the horror movie was promoted to a theatrical run starting on June 2, 2023. The film will then be released on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ internationally at a later date. Check out the trailer below:
The synopsis of the movie reads, “Still reeling from the tragic death of their mother, a teenage girl and her little brother find themselves plagued by a sadistic presence in their house and struggle to get their grieving father to pay attention before it’s too late.” While the original story focussed on a father discussing the death of his children, which seemed to have been caused by an unseen entity that lurked in the cupboard. The story ends with the psychiatrist listening to the story being revealed as the man’s tormentor. In the new movie, the story’s focus will be shifted a little, which means that even King fans will have something new to look forward to.
The Boogeyman has been a long time coming, having initially been pitched in 2018 and then suffering several delays, not least from the COVID pandemic. Additionally, the film was one of the projects on the slate for 20th Century Fox and was put on hiatus while the merger with Disney was completed. Considering how well the test screenings have gone, it seems like the movie making it through production can only be a good thing for horror fans who have had a great year of terrifying movies in 2022 and are looking for more in 2023.
Stephen King Movies Are Always on the Horizon, Including The Dark Tower
As one of the most prolific horror writers of all time, Stephen King’s novels are always being acquired to be turned into movies and TV shows. Recently, there have been a number of successful adaptations of King’s stories, including the series The Outsider and IT, and there are many more currently in various stages of production and development. A movie version of Salem’s Lot is awaiting a release date, and new novels Fairy Tale and Billy Summers are already in contention for adaptations. One story that many fans of King eagerly want to see given a faithful movie or TV series is The Dark Tower, which could finally be coming thanks to Midnight Mass’ Mike Flanagan.
While The Dark Tower was given a big screen outing several years ago, with Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey in lead roles, the movie was a contracted mess of a film that King fans hated, and general audiences didn’t see any merit in. However, Flanagan has recently revealed that he has purchased the rights to King’s magnum opus and hopes to be able to do it justice on screen.
In the meantime, The Boogeyman is coming to bring that King fix to cinemas and will likely tap into the current run of successful horror movies that have recently scared up a decent box office. From the trailer, it seems like the film will bring another entry to the children-in-jeopardy sub-genre. The movie will be released on June 2, 2023.
