The upcoming drama The Bikeriders has been delayed amid the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. While the movie, which stars Austin Butler, Jodie Comer, and Tom Hardy, had been given a release date of December 1, 2023, the film has now been pushed back after talks between the actor’s union and the studios yielded no results. At present, The Bikeriders does not have a release date at all after being removed from the studio’s calendar (via THR).
No doubt Disney and 20th Century have pushed The Bikeriders back with the hopes that, once the strike has come to an end, the A-list cast and the likes of Butler, Comer, and Hardy will be able to partake in interviews and red-carpet events and thus help promote the film.
Several other major projects are set for release in December, including the action outing Silent Night, director Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things starring Emma Stone, the Roald Dahl prequel Wonka, comic book sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, wrestling drama The Iron Claw, the musical The Color Purple and the concert film Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé, which is due for release on December 1.
For the time being, you can watch the recent trailer for director Jeff Nichols’ upcoming drama, The Bikeriders, which finds the likes of Austin Butler, Jodie Comer, and Tom Hardy as the driving force behind this tale of outsiders. Coming courtesy of 20th Century Studios, The Bikeriders was screened at the Telluride Film Festival to critical acclaim, with audiences able to bask in its greatness later this year. “Kathy (Comer), a strong-willed member of the Vandals who’s married to a wild, reckless bikerider named Benny (Butler), recounts the Vandals’ evolution over the course of a decade, beginning as a local club of outsiders united by good times, rumbling bikes, and respect for their strong, steady leader Johnny (Hardy).
Over the years, Kathy tries her best to navigate her husband’s untamed nature and his allegiance to Johnny, with whom she feels she must compete for Benny’s attention. As life in the Vandals gets more dangerous, and the club threatens to become a more sinister gang, Kathy, Benny and Johnny are forced to make choices about their loyalty to the club and to each other.”
Written and directed by Jeff Nichols, who is known for crafting powerful dramas such as Take Shelter, Mud, Midnight Special, and Loving, The Bikeriders stars a stellar ensemble cast (most of whom did their own riding on an array of period-correct bikes) made up of some of the biggest names in Hollywood, including Jodie Comer (The Last Duel), Austin Butler (Elvis), Tom Hardy (Mad Max: Fury Road), Michael Shannon (The Shape of Water), Mike Faist (West Side Story), Boyd Holbrook (Logan), and Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead).
The Bikeriders Currently Has a Rating of 88% On Rotten Tomatoes
The Bikeriders has been called “a furious drama” and follows the rise of a fictional 1960s Midwestern motorcycle club through the lives of its members. Inspired by Danny Lyon’s iconic book of photography, The Bikeriders immerses you in the look, feel, and sounds of the bare-knuckled, grease-covered subculture of ’60s motorcycle riders.
The Bikeriders was recently screened at the Telluride Film Festival, and now stands at a hugely promising 88% on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes.
Sheri Linden of the Hollywood Reporter says, “From beginning to end, the visual beauty of the film pays tribute to the source material….” while The Playlist’s Gregory Ellwood writes, “Nichols has crafted a highly entertaining period piece on a legendary biker club that is at times sexy, funny, and filled with fisticuffs.”
Matt Neglia, reporting for Next Best Picture, offers, “‘The Bikeriders’ is an evocative and masculine piece of storytelling,” with Deadline’s Pete Hammond writing, “This ensemble cast is superb all around,” when describing the performances led by the main trio of BAFTA winner Jodie Comer and Academy Award nominees Austin Butler and Tom Hardy.
