Following the decision from Disney to drop The Bikeriders, an upcoming drama starring Tom Hardy, Austin Butler, and Jodie Comer, Focus Features acquired the worldwide rights to the New Regency film, and the movie will now rev into theaters on June 21, 2024. Now there’s a new trailer in anticipation for the film, which you can watch above. Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski said in a statement:

We are delighted to add such a riveting project to next year’s strong slate of films. We look forward to once again working alongside New Regency and reuniting with the multi-talented Jeff Nichols on another one of his visionary projects.

New Regency chair-CEO Yariv Milchan added, “We are excited to team up again with our Focus Features partners and look forward to another successful collaboration. And we couldn’t be prouder of The Bikeriders, Jeff Nichols and all the talent he has brought together to create this truly exceptional film.”

The drama, which is set in the 1960s and follows the rise of a fictional Chicago motorcycle club, was removed from the Disney release schedule just two months before it was due to land in theaters, with The House of Mouse dropping out of distribution. New Regency, the studio that financed The Bikeriders, shopped the movie around to seek out a new distributor, and were “open to all possibilities, including a streaming release.”

No reason for Disney’s decision has been given, but it is possible that issues that have arisen from the now concluded actors’ strike led to the studio backing out in order to prioritize other projects.

The Bikeriders has been well-received by critics so far, with MovieWeb’s own Patrick Hayes heaping praise on the vision of director Jeff Nichols.

“Other than drinking, fighting, and forming this insular men’s legion, these pseudo-gangsters have precious little going on, yet narratively, director and screenwriter Nichols does a flawless job of making The Bikeriders into an all-absorbing piece of cinema and, despite the group’s lack of real meaning, there is a depth and eloquent poignancy in everything The Bikeriders depicts.”

The Bikeriders

Written and directed by Jeff Nichols, who is known for crafting powerful dramas such as Take Shelter, Mud, Midnight Special, and Loving, The Bikeriders stars a stellar ensemble cast (most of whom did their own riding on an array of period-correct bikes) made up of some of the biggest names in Hollywood, including Jodie Comer (The Last Duel), Austin Butler (Elvis), Tom Hardy (Mad Max: Fury Road), Michael Shannon (The Shape of Water), Mike Faist (West Side Story), Boyd Holbrook (Logan), and Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead).

The Bikeriders has been called “a furious drama” and follows the rise of a fictional 1960s Midwestern motorcycle club through the lives of its members. Inspired by Danny Lyon’s iconic book of photography, The Bikeriders immerses you in the look, feel, and sounds of the bare-knuckled, grease-covered subculture of ’60s motorcycle riders.

The Bikeriders was screened at the Telluride Film Festival, and now stands at a hugely promising 85% on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes.

Sheri Linden of the Hollywood Reporter says, “From beginning to end, the visual beauty of the film pays tribute to the source material….” while The Playlist’s Gregory Ellwood writes, “Nichols has crafted a highly entertaining period piece on a legendary biker club that is at times sexy, funny, and filled with fisticuffs.”

Matt Neglia, reporting for Next Best Picture, offers, “‘The Bikeriders’ is an evocative and masculine piece of storytelling,” with Deadline’s Pete Hammond writing, “This ensemble cast is superb all around,” when describing the performances led by the main trio of BAFTA winner Jodie Comer and Academy Award nominees Austin Butler and Tom Hardy.

You can check out the official synopsis for The Bikeriders below:

“Kathy (Comer), a strong-willed member of the Vandals who’s married to a wild, reckless bikerider named Benny (Butler), recounts the Vandals’ evolution over the course of a decade, beginning as a local club of outsiders united by good times, rumbling bikes, and respect for their strong, steady leader Johnny (Hardy).

Over the years, Kathy tries her best to navigate her husband’s untamed nature and his allegiance to Johnny, with whom she feels she must compete for Benny’s attention. As life in the Vandals gets more dangerous, and the club threatens to become a more sinister gang, Kathy, Benny and Johnny are forced to make choices about their loyalty to the club and to each other.”
