The Bad Guys are back to spread some holiday cheer. DreamWorks Animation has dropped the first trailer for The Bad Guys: A Very Bad Holiday, which lands on Netflix November 30. The 22-minute holiday special is set before the events of the popular 2022 animated film The Bad Guys, and finds the titular gang doing the unthinkable: reigniting the city’s holiday spirit.
A Very Bad Holiday follows Mr. Wolf, Mr. Snake, Ms. Tarantula, Mr. Shark, and Mr. Piranha just ahead of their favorite day of the year: Christmas morning — because while everyone is home opening presents, it’s the perfect time to execute their city-wide holiday heist. But the crew of mischief-makers is shaken up when Christmas is unexpectedly canceled. Before they can commit some crimes, the anthropomorphic criminal crew must save Christmas by becoming stand-in Santas. As Mr. Wolf says in the trailer: “Let’s go do some good so we can be bad.” Check out the trailer for The Bad Guys: A Very Bad Holiday below.
The DreamWorks Animation Studios special is directed by Emmy Award winner Bret Haaland (The Penguins of Madagascar), who also serves as executive producer alongside Katherine Nolfi (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power).
A Very Bad Holiday brings in an all-new voice cast that features Michael Godere as Mr. Wolf, Ezekiel Ajeigbe as Mr. Shark, Raul Ceballos as Mr. Piranha, Chris Diamantopoulos as Mr. Snake, Mallory Low as Ms. Tarantula, and Zehra Fazal as Tiffany Fluffit. Two new characters, Gary and DJ Trudy Tude, are voiced by Keith Silverstein and Kari Wahlgren, respectively.

The original The Bad Guys animated feature was a commercial and critical success, grossing over $250 million globally and amassing praise for its humor and visual style, which drew from Into the Spider-Verse and featured a more illustrated style than what’s become the norm in animated features. In an interview with Polygon, The Bad Guys director Pierre Perifel spoke on why the DreamWorks project departed from the hyperrealistic animation style that has become so popular in recent years.
“Because I find [that style] … ‘boring’ is probably excessive, but I want to see something different,” Perifel told Polygon.” Frankly, I’m not the only one. I’m not the first one also to do a movie that’s slightly different [stylistically]. But I think there’s been very few right now, at least in the Hollywood industry, like Hollywood-feature big-studio types of films. You can see the trend is shifting a little bit.”
Loosely based on a children’s graphic novel series by Aaron Blabey, the first film follows the crew after they’re caught during a heist. To avoid prison, the gang of notorious animal criminals pretends to seek rehabilitation, only for their leader, Mr. Wolf, to realize that he genuinely wants to change his ways. The characters were voiced by Sam Rockwell, Marc Maron, Awkwafina, Craig Robinson, Anthony Ramos, Richard Ayoade, Zazie Beetz, Alex Borstein, and Lilly Singh, in the feature-length film.
The 2022 animated film was directed by Perifel (in his feature directorial premiere) from a screenplay by Etan Cohen (Holmes & Watson). Although The Bad Guys marked Perifel’s directorial debut, he previously served as an animator on features including Kung-Fu Panda 2 and Rise of the Guardians.
The Bad Guys is currently available to stream on Peacock, the Christmas special premieres on Netflix November 30.
