The Adam Project was first written by T.S. Nowlin, and was initially announced as Our Name Is Adam back in October 2012. Paramount Pictures was very interested in acquiring the film, with Tom Cruise attached to star. After going through “development hell”, the film was then revived in July 2020, and was moved to Netflix. Filming for The Adam Project began in November 2020 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Filming officially wrapped in March 2021.

Ryan Reynolds Discusses His Personal Connection to The Adam Project

Ryan Reynolds had recently sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss the “magic” behind the film. “At the end of the day, it’s a very personal story, a story about something that I think every single person can relate to.” He added, “I’m grateful that Netflix has a commitment to making movies like this, original stories based on nothing more than an idea, and we get to bring them to life. Especially films with this tone that — and I say this in a good way — is a little bit old-fashioned with an ’80s wish-fulfillment, meaning something amazing or even supernatural happens to a kid, but he’s home by dinner, and his parents have no clue. It’s a type of old-school, warm and nostalgic filmmaking that I love.”

Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy’s recent collaboration in the video game-inspired Free Guy was released in August 2021. The film went on to help resurrect the COVID-19 pandemic box office for 20th Century Studios. The film earned a total of $331 million worldwide. Shawn Levy’s previous credits include the Night at the Museum films, The Pink Panther, Date Night, The Internship, and This Is Where I Leave You.

Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy are set to produce the action-adventure film through their respective production banners Maximum Effort and 21 Laps Entertainment. Alongside Reynolds and Levy is David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger, who are producing for Skydance. The Adam Project is currently scheduled to be released on Netflix on March 11.
