A big week in the Netflix top 10s where what didn’t enter is just as interesting as what did. Below, we’ll take you through the latest on That 90s Show and A Family Affair and look at how well Supacell and Worst Roommate Ever launched.

Every Tuesday, Netflix updates its top 10 stats page with 40 new hourly figures for the top movies and shows of the past seven days. To browse the top 10 hourly data easily, use our Top 10 search tool.

Note: In this report of Netflix’s hours viewed from June 24th, 2024 to June 30th, 2024, we’ll use “Complete Viewings Equivalent,” or CVE, expressed in millions. That means we divide the hours viewed announced by Netflix by the runtime of films or series. It allows for better comparisons between films and series, but it’s not an audience metric. It is the minimum number of viewings if they were all complete from the first second to the last of the film or season.


1. That ’90s Show flops hard for its second season.

This week is all about the decay rate in the viewership between seasons, and let’s start with the biggest flop of the year, in my opinion. The release of season 2 of That 90s Show failed to enter the weekly Top 10 for its first 4 days when only 1.7M CVEs were enough to be in the Top 10.

Why is that the biggest flop of the year so far? Last year, season 1 had a grand opening week, with 10.4M CVEs over its first four days, and still the 8th-best launch for any new Netflix original series released on a Thursday.

That 90s Show Fails To Enter Netflix Top 10s

Back in 2023, the trajectory for its viewership really slowed down after these first four days, and that was quite uncommon, suggesting a lot of subscribers decided to try the series but also decided to drop out. Well, we now know just how big that drop in viewers was, as season 2 suffered at least an 83% drop for its first four days compared to season 1 (and that’s considering it just missed the Top 10 with 1.69M CVEs, but it might have been even worse).

So, where do we go from there? Well, the series is already renewed for a third part (coming in November), but beyond that, I would be very surprised if it continues with a fourth part. However, The Upshaws is another American sitcom coming from Netflix, and this one has been going on for seven parts even though it barely registers in the global Top 10. So, That 90s Show might go beyond its third part based on whatever metric Netflix thinks it does reach its goal. But that metric is not pure viewership.


2. Bridgerton season 3 enters the all-time Top 10 charts.

How do you know if a Netflix series reaches an “elite” status? When the new season does better than the previous one, and believe me, it is quite rare. Stranger Things, Ginny & Georgia, and Outer Banks are up there, and now we can add Bridgerton to the list. Season 3 of the hit show is well on its way to doing better than season 2 during its launch period.

It is standing at #10 with 91.9M CVEs, just barely two million under season 2. But it will pass it next week, for sure. But how high can it go? Can season 3 even beat season 1, currently at #4 with 113.3M after its first 91 days? The batch release makes the water a bit, to be sure, but since all of the Bridgerton seasons are in the Top 10 this week, it might give the third season nice legs over the summer before the definitive results in mid-September.


3. Sweet Tooth season 3 is no Bridgerton season 3.

As I said, it is very rare for the third season of a Netflix show to do better than the previous seasons. Sweet Tooth provides an example this week, as the third season is coming out of the global Top 10 after four weeks.

Season 1 was released in 2021, just a few weeks before Netflix started to share actual viewership numbers. So we only have numbers for its fifth and sixth weeks, and as you can see, Season 1 was a notch higher than its subsequent seasons.

Based on other series with a similar trajectory (such as Clickbait or The Sandman), we can estimate that Sweet Tooth season 1 probably did between 22 and 26M CVEs after its first 14 days back in 2021.

From 22-26M for the first 14 days of Season 1, viewership for Sweet Tooth S2 fell to 17.6M CVEs during the same time period, and Season 3 only got 12.9M CVEs. That would mean a 50% drop in viewership between seasons 1 and 3, which is quite common but also explains why the series only got three seasons and not more. Now, a 50% drop between seasons 1 and 3 is still leagues above an 83% drop between seasons 1 and 2!


4. Worst Roommate Ever also suffers the wrath of the decay rate.

Season 2 of the docuseries Worst Roommate Ever was released last week, and sure enough, its first numbers indicate quite a drop in viewership compared to the release of season 1. With only 5.7M CVEs after five days, the launch is noticeably lower than the 13.3M CVEs amassed by Season 1 in its first six days.

5. Supacell does a supa launch.

The British series Supacell did a great launch with 6.4M CVEs, the sixth-best launch for an English series released on a Thursday this year. Why is that a Supacell launch? Contrary to the series that did better (and even worse), the series does not boast a recognizable cast or a known IP. British Netflix is really on a roll in 2024.

6. A Family Affair does the job.

The rom-com A Family Affair needed to be big, and it was with a great launch of 26.8M CVEs, the fourth-best launch of a film released on a Friday in 2024 so far, besting Trigger Warning or Rebel Moon part 2.
