A new trailer for Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving has been unveiled. The upcoming slasher follows a mysterious Thanksgiving-inspired killer who terrorizes Plymouth, Massachusetts, after a Black Friday riot ends in tragedy. In true Roth fashion, the trailer teases gory fun. The Thanksgiving references are abundant: the killer dons a pilgrim suit, adorable corn holders are used as weapons, the town hosts a holiday parade and a woman roasts like a turkey. And, yeah, there will be “no leftovers.” Check out the red band trailer, courtesy of IGN, below.
Based on the mock trailer presented in Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s 2007 double feature Grindhouse, the feature-length film arrives just in time for Turkey Day, landing in theaters on November 17. Roth revealed plans for the movie based on the trailer back in 2010 but recently said that bringing Thanksgiving to life has been a lengthy process due to setbacks, including rights issues and the global pandemic. There was also the matter of getting the script just right. As he told Collider:
“For years, I was just connecting the dots between the trailer, and then I was like, ‘Am I just filming the scenes in between what I already did before it?’ (Co-writer) Jeff Rendell and I just went through every iteration. I’ll tell you, the big revelation was, he said, ‘I have to just pretend that Thanksgiving 1980 exists, and that it was so offensive that every print was destroyed, and the only thing that survived was the trailer. This is the reboot of what that movie was. Every copy of the script was burned. Every print was burned. The only thing that survived was that one trailer, on the darkest corners of the internet. So, we have to make a movie based on that. This is the reboot of what that was.’ That freed me up creatively to go, ‘I can use a couple of my favorite things in the trailer, but I don’t have to worry about recreating the trailer.’ That trailer was for a movie where every print was destroyed. Now, this is gonna be its own thing.”

Addison Rae & Patrick Dempsey Lead Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving stars social media star, singer, and actress Addison Rae. Besides appearing in reality television shows like Keeping Up with the Kardashians and Addison Rae Goes Home, she has acted in films including He’s All That and Spy Cat. Thanksgiving marks Rae’s first venture into the horror genre. Patrick Dempsey, known for his roles in Grey’s Anatomy, Enchanted, and Scream 3, stars as the town’s sheriff, while Suits star Rick Hoffman also appears, reuniting with Roth after appearing in 2005’s Hostel.
Thanksgiving also stars Jalen Thomas Brooks (Walker), Milo Manheim (Zombies), Nell Verlaque (Big Shot), Gina Gershon (Chucky), and Tim Dillon (Boston Psychiatrist). Roth and Rendell co-wrote the script. Roth and Roger Birnbaum serve as producers.
While Halloween-centered slashers have been made in abundance, Roth taps into an underrepresented holiday in the film genre with Thanksgiving. His film joins a limited number of slashers, including the 1980s films Home Sweet Home and Blood Rage, set around the holiday. Will Roth’s Thanksgiving become a family tradition viewed during the yearly feast? You can decide when the movie hits theaters on November 17 courtesy of TriStar Pictures and Spyglass Media Group.
