T-Mobile has launched a new Google TV-powered 4K streaming device called TVision Hub. It sports a Chromecast-like design and should function similarly as well. But there are some additional features in tow.
Firstly, the TVision Hub has a built-in Ethernet port, something you can’t find on Google’s Chromecast with Google TV. This should enable you to directly plug in an internet cable if your home Wi-Fi connection isn’t stable or fast enough to stream 4K content when available. T-Mobile will not supply an ethernet cable in the retail ox though.
T-Mobile’s website says the device features a micro USB port for power along with a USB Type-C port. You’ll get both the charging adapter as well as a USB cable in the box.
The accompanying remote also comes with some added features. It not only has a dedicated power button for the box but also for the TV, along with input controls. There appear to be shortcut buttons for live TV guide as well as YouTube, Netflix, and a T-Mobile-branded TV app. It’s unclear what the latter is though, as T-Mobile has already shuttered its streaming service, which interesting was branded TVision as well. Maybe there’s something new coming up. We shall see.
As on Google’s Chromecast, the dedicated Google Assistant button on the remote for T-Mobile’s TVision will let you access live as well as recorded content over voice commands. You can also use it to open apps or perform other actions.
With built-in Chromecast support, you will be able to stream content from your phone to your TV via TVision Hub. You can also connect headphones, gaming controllers, and other devices via Bluetooth for an immersive experience on the big screen.
T-Mobile TVision Hub: specs and price
The T-Mobile TVision Hub is powered by an Amlogic S905Y4 chipset. It features a 64-bit quad-core CPU and an ARM Mali-G31 MP2 GPU. The device comes with 2GB of RAM and 8GB of flash storage. We also have support for 2×2 Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0. The device will reportedly support AV1 decoding and run Android TV 11 out of the box.
T-Mobile will charge $50 for the TVision Hub, which is in line with what Google’s Chromecast with Google TV cost at launch. At that price, you get access to over 8,000 streaming apps with more than 700,000 movies and TV shows as well as live TV. But if you’re getting a qualifying new line of Home Internet service from T-Mobile, you could get the streaming stick at no additional cost.
