“Riko and Kane have got it all… big dreams, no respect and a fifteen grand debt. Could things get any worse? Yes! So, it’s time to man up and finally be taken serious as ‘Roadman,’” reads the lengthy official synopsis for Sumotherhood.
The outline continues, “Once putting their heads together on various ways to make some money, they decide to rob a megastar in a nightclub toilet and hold up the local bank but things inevitably don’t go to plan… However somehow a misunderstanding leads them to be desired and acquired for business with one of East London’s toughest firms, putting them in the line of fire to the firm’s arch-rivals. Can Riko and Kane live up to their name? Will Riko win the affection of Tamara and if he does, will Tyrese, Tamara’s lunatic stepbrother, allow Riko to live? Will his life be worth living if the local London Feds draw a line back to our duo? Anything can happen when Riko and Kane are on the scene in this new action packed urban comedy.”
Sumotherhood Stars Adam Deacon, Jennifer Saunders, Ed Sheeran and…Jeremy Corbyn
Written by Adam Deacon, Michael Vu, and Jazzie Zonzolo, Sumotherhood is also directed by and stars Adam Deacon, with the movie acting as an action-packed spoof of his previous endeavors Kidulthood and Adulthood. Released in 2006 and 2008 respectively, the first outing deals with the lives of several teenagers as they tackle drugs, sex, and violence, while the sequel follows a character from the first movie, Sam (Noel Clarke), as he tries to change his life following a six-year prison sentence.
The two Hood films take a gritty look at life in London, and it’s certainly a look that is prime for humorous reinterpretation, with Sumotherhood adding a funny twist to proceedings.
Sumotherhood has amassed an all-star (and occasionally) unexpected cast alongside Deacon, with the movie set to star Jennifer Saunders (Absolutely Fabulous, Shrek 2), Danny Sapani (The Diplomat, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), Peter Serafinowicz (Shaun of the Dead, Guardians of the Galaxy), Jazzie Zonzolo (Anuvahood), Jaime Winstone (Kidulthood), Kevin Bishop (Miracle Workers), and Vas Blackwood (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels).
But that’s not all! Sumotherhood also features appearances from several superstars of the music world, including Ed Sheeran, Lethal Bizzle, and Megaman, and even British politician Jeremy Corbyn, as well as Richie Campbell, London Hughes, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Arnold Jorge, Eddie Kadi, Ella Vaday, Charlie Sloth, Denise van Outen, Tamzin Outhwaite, and Leomie Anderson.
Sumotherhood comes to UK cinemas from 13 October. Wider release dates have yet to be revealed.
