The Star Wars KOTOR remake is apparently still in development according to the CEO of Saber Interactive. News of the game’s development status not being in a canceled state is surely a positive outcome for fans. The game was first revealed back in 2021 for PS5 and PC and has gone through multiple changes since then. Initially, it was being developed by Aspyr Media, the studio behind numerous remasters and port projects of older Star Wars games. Such as the ones that were recently launched on Nintendo Switch.
Development then changed hands and was taken over by Saber Interactive (now split from Embracer Group), which is now the current studio working on the game. Years of no information about it led some to wonder if the game was canceled. It was also reported in 2023 that the game was “dead” and that at the time, it was not being worked on “in any way, at any studio.” That’s a statement from Jeff Grubb during his Game Mess Mornings show back around November 17 reported on by Insider Gaming. Following its development limbo, Saber is happy to assure fans the game hasn’t been tossed in the bin.
Star Wars KOTOR remake development may still take years
No doubt fans are going to be happy the game is still happening, but it’s still likely years away. Speaking with IGN, Saber Interactive CEO Matthew Karch says the game was “alive and well.” Karch doesn’t mention a timeline. However, Embracer Group CEO Lars Wingefors reportedly implied it may still be a long way off. Wingefors says this during an investor call from around March 15.
Although Saber’s CEO doesn’t give details on a launch window, he does state that the studio wants to exceed player expectations. “We’re dedicated to making sure we exceed consumer expectations,” Karch said in the interview with IGN. Taking this into consideration, it seems plausible that the game is indeed still years away from release.
If you need your Star Wars game fix, however, there are some good options. These are games you can play both right now and very soon. Star Wars Outlaws launches later this year and will even be playable via GeForce NOW. And Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is already available on multiple platforms.
