Building up to tomorrow’s trailer, a new teaser for the upcoming animated sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse offers a glimpse at the vast array of variants that will make up the Spider-Force. A (large) group of Spider-People tasked with protecting the multiverse, our hero Miles Morales will find himself going up against these alternate versions of himself in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which is due to land in theaters later this year. Check out the teaser, courtesy of the official Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Twitter account, below.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse begins with Miles Morales reuniting with Gwen Stacy aka Spider-Woman. Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is soon catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero, so he can save the people he loves most.
The difference of opinion between Miles and the rest of the Spider-Force will result in our inexperienced Spider-Man doing battle with the much more accomplished Spider-Man 2099, voiced by Star Wars and Moon Knight star Oscar Isaac. “He’s not the villain of the movie, but he’s sort of an antagonist to Miles because they both think that what they’re doing is the right thing,” said writer and producer Chris Miller.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Will Introduce All Manner of Spider-People
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse sees the likes of Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, and Jake Johnson return to their respective roles as Miles Morales aka Spider-Man, Gwen Stacy aka Spider-Woman, and Peter B. Parker aka Spider-Man. The sequel is all set to introduce all manner of other Spider-People from a range of different universes, including Oscar Isaac as Miguel O’Hara aka Spider-Man 2099, a Spider-Man from an alternate universe set in the year 2099 and leader of the Spider-Force, a group of Spider-People from alternate universes tasked with protecting the Multiverse; Issa Rae as Jessica Drew aka Spider-Woman, a pregnant Spider-Woman and prominent member of the Spider-Force; Daniel Kaluuya as Hobart “Hobie” Brown aka Spider-Punk, a British, punk rock version of Spider-Man; and Karan Soni as Pavitr Prabhakar aka Spider-Man India, an Indian version of Spider-Man.
The rest of the cast includes the likes of Brian Tyree Henry as Jefferson Davis, Miles’ father; Luna Lauren Vélez as Rio Morales, Miles’ mother; Jorma Taccone as the Spider-Man supervillain The Vulture; Shea Whigham as George Stacy, Gwen’s father; and finally, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World star Jason Schwartzman as the true villain of the piece, Jonathan Ohnn aka The Spot. A D-list supervillain whose body is covered by interdimensional portals that allow him to travel through different universes, The Spot has been confirmed as the main antagonist across both Spider-Verse sequels.
Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson from a screenplay by Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and David Callaham, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is scheduled to be released on June 2, 2023. A further sequel, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is scheduled for release on March 29, 2024.
