The international trailer for the highly anticipated sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse reveals new footage, and teases how difficult things are going to get for our returning hero Miles Morales. The latest look at Miles’ next foray into the madness of the multiverse (via Twitter user Spider-Man News) finds his friendly neighborhood web-slinger taking on not just D-list supervillain The Spot, but his own variant Spider-Man 2099 as well. Check out the new trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse below.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse begins with Miles Morales reuniting with Gwen Stacy aka Spider-Woman. Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is soon catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero, so he can save the people he loves most.

Much like its Academy Award-winning predecessor, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will once again be led once again by our main Spider-Man, Shameik Moore as Miles Morales aka Spider-Man, with the likes of Hailee Steinfeld returning as Gwen Stacy aka Spider-Woman alongside Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker aka Spider-Man.

The sequel will massively expand on the small number of variants introduced in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, with some of the main players being Oscar Isaac’s Miguel O’Hara aka Spider-Man 2099, Issa Rae as Jessica Drew aka Spider-Woman, Daniel Kaluuya as Hobart “Hobie” Brown aka Spider-Punk, Karan Soni as Pavitr Prabhakar aka Spider-Man India, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andy Samberg, who recently joined the project and is now heavily rumored to be providing the voice for Ben Reilly aka Scarlet Spider.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Finds Miles at Odds With His Own Variants

Sony Pictures Releasing

Not only will Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse find Miles Morales at odds with his very own variants, it will see him hunted down by the most-powerful member, Spider-Man 2099. Voiced by Star Wars and Dune star Oscar Isaac, Miguel O’Hara aka Spider-Man 2099 is an alternate version of the superhero from an alternate universe set in the year 2099. Now leader of the multiverse-protecting Spider-Force, Spider-Man 2099 and Miles find themselves clashing when the former asks the latter to make an ultimate sacrifice. Something that Miles understandably does not want to do.

“He’s not the villain of the movie, but he’s sort of an antagonist to Miles because they both think that what they’re doing is the right thing,” writer and producer Christopher Miller revealed regarding Spider-Man 2099’s role in Across the Spider-Verse.

Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson from a screenplay by Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and David Callaham, and also featuring Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Vélez, Jorma Taccone, Shea Whigham, and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World star Jason Schwartzman as Jonathan Ohnn aka The Spot, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is scheduled to be released on June 2, 2023. A further sequel, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is scheduled for release on March 29, 2024.
