Thanks to the advent of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s multiverse, and the way it factored into Spider-Man: No Way Home, fans would be thrilled were three separate franchises revolving around the iconic superhero to exist individually, even though it sounds a little like overkill.
We know that Tom Holland’s fourth solo outing is in the early stages of development, but Andrew Garfield revealed he’d be open to discussing another return as the web-slinger if it was done for reasons other than commercial gain, with social media having been relentlessly campaigning for The Amazing Spider-Man 3 since last month.
On top of that, a lot of people would also love to see Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire reunite for a Spider-Man 4 of their own, although that’s the least likely to happen by far. However, writer James Vanderbilt did confirm to ScreenRant that the project had a completed shooting script ready to go, before Sony pulled the plug.
“Yeah so, Spider-Man 4, we had a full script sort of ready to go, and, as is sort of the case when you’re a working feature writer, they brought in some other great writers to punch it up. They changed some things, and I think about a year later, they got to a point where — and I don’t know why — but they got to a point where they decided that wasn’t the road they were going to go down.”
Stranger things have definitely happened, and Raimi is back in the Marvel business in a major way with this year’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, so it can’t be 100% ruled out by any stretch of the imagination. Then again, we wouldn’t hold our breath, when Maguire committing to an action-intensive shoot after making precisely one live-action film appearance since 2014 would be a huge ask.
