Sony has upgraded the DualSense controllers with the release of the three newest colors – the purple, pink, and blue. These interesting upgrades differentiate these colors of the DualSense from the white, black, and red controllers. Even if only slightly.
Worth noting is that the issues some found with the original colors, may not be an issue for others. If they noticed at all. But it’s nice to know that Sony is taking steps to make little tweaks and adjustments to improve things wherever possible. No matter how small the improvements.
As noted by TronicsFix on YouTube (via TechRadar), two issues (gripes?) with the DualSense before were the triggers and the thumb sticks. And it appears that Sony may have made some small adjustments with the new colors to combat that.
New DualSense controller colors get upgrades to the triggers
The main adjustment Sony has made with these new DualSense colors is to the triggers. On the three new colors, Sony is using slightly thicker springs for the triggers. The older colors use a spring that’s 0.25mm thick. Whereas the new colors use a spring that’s 0.3mm thick.
This might seem like a small change, and really, it is. But the thicker springs could help with the durability of the triggers in the controllers. Overtime, players may notice the triggers not working as intended. Though it would likely take many thousands of hours of playtime over the PS5’s lifecycle.
Hopefully, these thicker springs will help combat any issues that could pop up. It’s not clear if these new thicker springs are intended to enhance durability or not. But that seems like the most logical reason for swapping them out.
In addition to the springs, Sony also seems to have changed some of the plastic pieces on the thumb stick modules. Based on the teardown video these are just different colored pieces of plastic. So it seems less likely that this will help with the stick drift problems that users have been having. But it’s still possible that this was Sony’s intention for the change.
With these changes aside, the new DualSense colors are a nice upgrade based on the color alone. So if you want a controller that looks a little more lively, these are a good bet now that they’re all available.
