A report surfaced today stating that Sony has cut PS VR2 production numbers in half, citing lower than expected pre-order amounts. Sony is said to have now lowered its forecast for sales of the upcoming VR headset. However, a new report from GameIndustry.biz states that that isn’t actually the case.

According to the new report, Sony isn’t lessening production. The company reportedly says fans of the PlayStation platform remain enthusiastic about the launch of the hardware. And that sales projections remain the same. Sony’s PS VR2 is set to launch in February 22 with around 37 titles, though not all will necessarily be available on launch day.

It’ll also retail for $550. Which is by no account a small sum of money. Especially when you consider that the console needed, a PS5, costs just $50 less if you go with the disc edition. Despite the high price tag, and the lack of compatibility for games from the first-generation headset, Sony seems to be confident that sales projections are accurate.

PS VR2 production numbers may be unchanged after all

There are some things to consider here that, don’t necessarily mean sales projections haven’t changed. But it sure seems like things may be continuing apace. While it’s entirely possible that sales projections have been adjusted down, you can still pre-order a PS VR2. There’s no wait list like there has been for the PS5 for most of the console’s lifecycle thus far.

Which could suggest that Sony still plans to sell as many PS VR2 headsets as it always has at launch. 2 million. That might sound like a pretty high number at launch. But the PS5 sold about 7.8 million units in 2020 and it only launched with about a month and a half left in the year.

Since then, Sony has reportedly sold over 30 million PS5 units. And when compared to that number, 2 million really doesn’t seem all that high. Time will tell if Sony has really adjusted its sales projections, and whether or not it meets that goal.
