Sony envisions charging wireless earbuds with your PS5 controller

Imagine a world where you’re using true wireless earbuds for your games, and you can use your PS5 controller to charge them when they need a battery boost. Sony has imagined it, and it seems possible the company may actually be working on developing this type of controller.

Recently Sony filed for a patent on a PS5 controller design that has a slot for charging true wireless earbuds. And based on the drawings the earbuds would fit into a slot where the touchpad is on the current DualSense. The figure drawings suggest Sony is envisioning the earbuds fitting beneath the touchpad. So it wouldn’t actually be replaced. However the patent also shows other potential locations for them. Several drawings show the earbuds fitting beneath the touchpad but in different positions. Whereas another one imagines them fitting into slots in the hand grips.

The patent (spotted by GameRant) shows that the controller would act as both a way to store the earbuds when not in use and charge them. Serving a dual purpose. It’s not clear if Sony has these in R&D or if it plans to ever release such a controller. But with the recent launch of the INZONE Buds and the upcoming PlayStation Explore earbuds, a controller like this makes perfect sense.

Sony may never release a PS5 controller that charges earbuds

While this seems like a perfectly fine idea and it would actually be a good move considering the PlayStation Explore earbuds, there’s no guarantee Sony will ever launch such a controller. Patents are not a guarantee that Sony is even working on the product. All they are, are a way for Sony to secure this idea before other companies do the same thing with the same kind of tech. Having said that, the fact that Sony has filed for the patent means at the very least Sony is interested.

Someone at the company has kicked around the idea of making this a reality. Enough for the company to work up drawings and describe how the tech might work before filing for the patent. In truth it would be an extremely useful feature. So here’s to hoping Sony ends up making these for a release down the line.
