Sonic and Knuckles clash in the latest trailer for Paramount Pictures’ upcoming video game sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Released by Paramount, the trailer offers plenty of new footage as well as a better look at both the return of Jim Carrey as a much balder and far more mustachioed Dr. Robotnik and his sidekick, Knuckles, voiced by The Suicide Squad star Idris Elba.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 finds the world’s favorite blue hedgehog back for a next-level adventure in the sequel to 2020’s hugely popular first outing. After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is eager to prove he has what it takes to be a true hero. His test comes when Dr. Robotnik returns, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to destroy civilizations. Robotnik, who has returned to Earth after escaping from the mushroom planet he was left stranded on at the end of the first Sonic the Hedgehog, will not be the only one with a sidekick this time around. No, this time, Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a globe-trotting journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.
From the filmmakers behind The Fast and the Furious and Deadpool, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 sees Ben Schwartz return as the voice of Sonic, with James Marsden and Tika Sumpter also set to reprise their respective roles of Tom and Maddie Wachowski. Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, and Jim Carrey also return, with the sequel introducing new additions Shemar Moore, who has been cast in an undisclosed role, with Idris Elba as the voice of Knuckles, and Colleen O’Shaughnessey as the voice of Tails.
Knuckles Will Terrorize Sonic & Tails in Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Knuckles the Red Echidna is a fan-favorite character from the video games, and fans cannot wait to see Idris Elba bring him to life. Director Jeff Fowler has since hyped up the character’s appearance in the upcoming sequel, comparing Knuckles to both The Terminator and Marvel antihero The Winter Soldier.
“I always have kind of joked he’s like the Terminator or the Winter Soldier coming into our movie world where he’s spent his life training to be a warrior,” the filmmaker teased. “The echidnas are all about honor. Everything about him is a total contrast to Sonic. Sonic has no training. Sonic sort of flies by the seat of his pants, he has no discipline, and Knuckles is all disciplined. So it was always about, sort of from a storytelling standpoint, all of the great contrasts we could create between these two characters, and just put them on a collision course in a really great way, and just see that Sonic’s got a lot to learn.”
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is scheduled for theatrical release in the United States on April 8, 2022, by Paramount Pictures in association with Sega Sammy Group. A third installment in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has already been confirmed, along with a spinoff centered on Knuckles.
