The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 has become one of the most anticipated Qualcomm chips in years. The company will implement entirely new custom cores, which should have a positive impact on both energy efficiency and performance. However, the improvements will also bring higher prices. A new leak has revealed how expensive the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip will be.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 could be 20% more expensive than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3
In recent years, prices for Qualcomm’s latest flagship mobile SoCs have been on the rise. In late 2023, a company executive confirmed that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will be no exception. That could lead to more expensive flagship phones and tablets by 2025, as manufacturers have less room to maneuver on the final price. That said, according to Ice Universe on Weibo, the chip will cost around $240 per unit. For reference, the current Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 costs around $200.
The tipster does not provide any further details on key aspects regarding the price. Qualcomm will reportedly offer the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 in variants with and without 5G modems (SM8750 and SM8750P, respectively). However, the post does not specify whether that price will be for the model with the Snapdragon X80 5G modem or for the WiFi-only one. The latter model primarily caters to flagship tablets that lack cellular connectivity.
Also, probably not all Android brands will get the same price. Companies with larger market volumes usually get better prices, as they guarantee more units sold. Samsung is among the companies that usually get more favorable terms thanks to its current position.
This chip will use custom Oryon cores
If you are not aware, Qualcomm will implement custom Oryon cores in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. The company designed the Oryon cores for Snapdragon X chips intended for Windows laptops. Qualcomm’s latest flagship SoC with custom cores was the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. The latter relied on the older Kryo designs with some tweaks. However, the Oryon cores are a “fresh start” from scratch, so expectations are high.
