Qualcomm has already confirmed that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will launch in October 2024. This confirmation comes from Qualcomm’s Chief Marketing Officer (CMO), Don McGuire, who announced as much during MWC 2024.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will launch in October 2024, it has been confirmed

He confirmed that the Snapdragon Summit will take place in October. He did specifically mention the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, so there’s no denying it anymore. Qualcomm’s flagship SoC always gets announced during the Snapdragon Summit, so that’s not surprising.

In addition to that, McGuire also mentioned that the company’s “mobile platforms are reinvented with Oryon CPU”. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is expected to utilize Oryon cores, in case you’re out of the loop.

McGuire also told people not to be afraid of AI, but to embrace it. He said that AI will basically come as a “sixth sense” to people, like a “second brain”. He said that the whole point of it is not to replace you, but to serve as your assistant, kind of.

It will feature custom Oryon cores and considerable NPU improvements

In addition to new Oryon cores, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will also be getting a considerable NPU (Neural Processing Unit) upgrade. That’s also something that McGuire mentioned during his brief talk to Snapdragon insiders.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is rumored to come in a 2+6 configuration. If that ends up happening, then Qualcomm plans to go down the MediaTek route and eliminate efficiency cores altogether. It remains to be seen how will that affect battery life.

TSMC’s second-gen 3nm process does increase power efficiency, so… it will be an interesting change, that’s for sure. The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 all have efficiency cores, and they did a great job with power consumption. That’s one of their main advantages compared to their MediaTek counterparts.

So, there’s plenty to look forward to, even though we won’t be seeing the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 until October.
