The 1998 action-comedy Small Soldiers is looked upon fondly by a certain generation of moviegoers, and while a sequel has yet to materialize in the decades since, it’s never too late. As this new fan film proves. Conceived as a ‘Proof of Concept’ trailer by the video game company Comadran Studios using Unreal Engine 5, the 5-minute trailer imagines a return of the violent toys as Small Soldiers: War for the Nekron finds two different factions once again waging war. Check out the concept trailer below.

“Hey there, YouTube community! We are happy to announce the Proof of Concept trailer for our next big project at Comadran Studios,” a description alongside the footage reads. “Get ready to dive into the extraordinary world of Small Soldiers, an epic toy battle brought to life in Unreal Engine 5, pushing the boundaries of cinematic storytelling to new heights!”

While neither our hero Archer nor the villainous Major Chip Hazard appear in the footage, Small Soldiers: War for the Nekron promises to deliver a sequel to the first Small Soldiers, and finally deliver on the tease left at the end of the original outing. The clip does feature a hint towards the Commando Elite, however, with the central character and leader of the Space Elite revealing that she has received an order from “CHIPHZRD” to neutralize the Necronite threat, the alien toys who, much like the Gorgonites before them, will have to fight to survive.

Releaded in 1998 and directed by Gremlins filmmaker Joe Dante, Small Soldiers follows teenager Alan, who buys a set of Commando Elite action figures while helping to run his father’s struggling toy shop. Unaware that they have been programmed with military technology the toys, including leader Chip Hazard, spring to life and start taking their directives seriously, beginning by “killing” their enemies, the toy Gorgonites. But Archer and the Gorgonites won’t go down without a fight as Alan gets caught in the middle of the war alongside his neighbor and crush, Christy.

Starring Gregory Smith as Alan Abernathy, Kirsten Dunst as Christy Fimple, and Kevin Dunn, Ann Magnuson, Wendy Schaal, and the late, great Phil Hartman as the put upon parents, as well as Frank Langella as the voice of Archer and Tommy Lee Jones as the voice Major Chip Hazard, Small Soldiers was met with mixed reviews upon release, but has since become a firm family favorite.

Despite the critical reception, Small Soldiers saw success at the box office, grossing $87.5 million against its $40 million budget. A sequel to Small Soldiers has been discussed over the years, with Dreamworks assigning Megamind writers Alan Schoolcraft and Brent Simons with the task of penning the script. Sadly, nothing ever came of it, and apart from potential reboots there has been no word of a follow-up to Small Soldiers since.

Could Small Soldiers: War for the Nekron finally provide the sequel that fans have been waiting for?
