Alongside the exciting first footage (which has been released via EW) from Silent Night, you can check out the wonderfully simple synopsis for the movie below:
“A grieving father enacts his long-awaited revenge against a ruthless gang on Christmas Eve.”
Directed by John Woo and written by Robert Archer Lynn, Silent Night stars Joel Kinnaman (RoboCop, Altered Carbon) alongside Scott Mescudi, aka Kid Cudi (X, Don’t Look Up), Harold Torres (Memory, Run Coyote Run), and Catalina Sandino Moreno (Maria Full of Grace, A Most Violent Year).
Lead star Joel Kinnaman has discussed the complete lack of dialogue, and how that offers the perfect outlet for the action and his acting.
“It was the perfect kind of script to try this sort of cinematic experiment. It’s a very dynamic action movie with a lot of heavy drama, but the actual plot is pretty simple. And I think you really want that in a film where you don’t have any dialogue to explain to the viewers what’s happening. So I think it’s going to be pretty easy to follow, and hopefully you’ll get all the emotion just through the eyes and through the action. And I hope it’s going to be pretty damn epic. That’s what it felt like when we shot it.”

John Woo Has Explained Why Silent Night Has No Dialogue
Director John Woo, who returns with his first American feature film since Paycheck back in 2003, has explained why he wanted to tell this action tale without the use of any dialogue.
“The whole movie is without dialogue. It allowed me to use visuals to tell the story, to tell how the character feels. We are using music instead of language, and the movie is all about sight and sound. The budget was a little tight, and the schedule was a little tight, but it made me change my working style. For a big movie, a studio movie, we shoot a lot of coverage then leave it to the cutting room. But in this movie, I tried to combine things without doing any coverage shots. I had to force myself to use a new kind of technique. Some scenes were about two or three pages, but I did it all in one shot.”
Kinnaman meanwhile has revealed how the approach to Silent Night has enabled him to stretch his acting muscles as well as his action ones.
“Some people thought like, ‘Oh, that’s easy. You don’t have to learn any lines’, but it’s not, because the eyes don’t lie. And often the dialogue, it will help you get there. It would help you get emotionally there. So it’s actually a lot harder to portray everything that you just have to have that kind of inner life and that inner motor and those thought processes going for real. You just can’t hide. So I think it’s very revealing when there’s no dialogue. And so it was a great challenge, and I was very excited that he wanted to do it with me.”
Silent Night is scheduled to be released in the United States on December 1, 2023, by Lionsgate.
