Google has started rolling out the September 2024 Android security update to 15 Pixel devices. Do note that this is your regular security update with a couple of additional fixes, not a Pixel feature drop update. That update is expected to land next month.
Google is now rolling out the September 2024 Android security update to 15 Pixel devices
15 devices are receiving this update as we speak, 14 smartphones and a tablet. It is coming to the entire Pixel 9 series, the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold.
The same goes for the Pixel 8 series, the Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, and Pixel 8a are getting the update. It is also rolling out to the original Pixel Fold, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, and Pixel 7a.
The entire Pixel 6 series is getting it too, including the Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, and Pixel 6a. On top of all those smartphones, the Google Pixel Tablet is also receiving this update as we speak. The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are the oldest phones that are getting this update. The Pixel 5 is no longer eligible.
With that being said, this update is rolling out in stages. So just because it’s rolling out doesn’t mean you’ll get it straight away. It could take a bit of time for you to get it, so be patient.
Some specific fixes for the Pixel 9 series, and other phones are on the way
This update, as you’d expect, includes a bunch of security fixes, but that’s not all. Google has two entries in the changelog it shared with the public. The first one is a fix to remove third-party APK to address security vulnerability. This fix is listed for all phones expected the Pixel 9 series. This could be related to the ‘Showstage’ demo app on Verizon devices, though Google didn’t confirm it.
The second entry is related only to the Pixel 9 series. It lists a fix to improve wireless (Wi-Fi) stability and performance in certain conditions.
Do note that this update is not based on Android 15. It’s still based on Android 14, the OS version that the Pixel 9 series launched with. Those four devices launched around two months early, which is why. Google is aiming to bring Android 15 to them soon, probably in October.
