All 32 episodes and two seasons of the coming-of-age comedy series The Wonder Years are bound for Netflix but only in the United States on January 1st, 2024.

In case you missed it, it was recently reported that Disney is to take receipt of at least 14 shows that originally aired on Disney-owned networks like ABC, Fox, FX, and others. The very first show from that list on the way is The Wonder Years with This Is Us also bound for Netflix in January 2024. Both are only set to arrive on Netflix in the United States as it currently stands.

When it was first announced that these shows were coming to Netflix through a new Disney deal, there was confusion online about which version would be available on the streaming service. Would it be the classic six-season original from the late 80s and early 90s, or the recent reboot? This has now been clarified: both seasons of the rebooted version are headed to Netflix.

This is confirmed by the show now appearing within the Netflix app for January 1st and showrunner/creator Saladin K. Patterson’s posting on Instagram asking people to “Help me spread the word!”.

That shouldn’t come as a huge surprise given that the original show’s rights aren’t with Disney despite originally airing on ABC.

What is The Wonder Years about?

Serving as a reboot to the aforementioned show that also aired on ABC, the show follows a Black middle-class family in the 1960s in Montgomery, Alabama, through the lens of a 12-year-old boy.

Don Cheadle provides narration throughout, with the main cast featuring Elisha “EJ” Williams, Dulé Hill, Saycon Sengbloh, Laura Kariuki, and Amari O’Neil.

The show was sadly one of the recent casualties at ABC with the network opting not to renew the show for a third season in September 2023.

Could Netflix revive The Wonder Years?

What is likely on the minds of anyone who has been a fan of the until now is whether or not Netflix could step in and save the show. In case you missed it

Theoretically, Netflix could revive the show, but it would need to put in some big numbers to justify getting all the cast back on board and produce a third season. In addition, Netflix would have to consider picking up the global rights and how well the show might play internationally.
