With just a week until the Scream release, Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) is on the scene to share with her viewers the gruesome history of The Woodsboro Murders. In true Dateline style, the promo for her upcoming special promises all the details of a town that was terrorized in 1996, with local teens slain splashed across the headlines. With a new slew of murders in the California town, she answers the question, “Has Ghostface returned?”
The official synopsis for Scream reads: “Twenty-five years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, a new killer has donned the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town’s deadly past. Neve Campbell (‘Sidney Prescott‘), Courteney Cox (‘Gale Weathers’) and David Arquette (‘Dewey Riley’) return to their iconic roles in Scream alongside Melissa Barrera, Kyle Gallner, Mason Gooding, Mikey Madison, Dylan Minnette, Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid, Marley Shelton, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Sonia Ammar.” The film is directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett and was penned by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick.
While the franchise’s original cast has returned, they share the opinion that the fifth Scream film is, in actuality, the launch of a new franchise. “This is the fifth one… it’s not Scream 5, though,” Cox explained. “This is Scream. The directors are incredible, they’re making it absolutely… it’s a new franchise… It’s hip. It’s scary. It’s just a new Scream. It’s not a reboot, it’s not a remake, it’s just a brand-new launch. I think it’s gonna be fantastic.”
Seconding the notion, “This new cast of characters is so wonderful. The legacy cast, they’re so wonderful. I think what we discovered, and what [screenwriters] Guy [Busick] and James [Vanderbilt] did, is they found a real reason for the next story to exist. We know that there is more gas in the tank. There are more stories to be told in Woodsboro, and about these characters, for sure,” Tyler Gillett, co-director explained to Total Film (via HelloSidney).
Gillet also champions the timing of the return of Ghostface, saying, “In 2020, and for the better part of the last decade, horror films have really been on the rise. And so there’s certainly a bit of that conversation in this story… It’s about what’s happening right now. There is a large conversation within this film that addresses the conversations that we’re all having in our lives about entertainment and media and the genre specifically.”
As early reviews are coming in, it looks like fans of the franchise were blown away by the new installment, or new franchise, depending who you ask. Either way, the responses have been overwhelmingly positive. “The new #Scream is a BLAST & my favorite since the original. There’s some sharp writing here – a nice balance of well-crafted scares & amusing commentary on modern horror. It also pokes a lot of fun at itself, too, while remaining a bloody whodunnit & a damn good time. I’m a fan!” says Eric Davis.
“What a welcome return to Woodsboro #Scream is! A razor sharp, bloody introspection on the genre and Wes Craven’s legacy. All the feels and one hell of a genre start to 2022. My horror heart is so full.” praises Meagan Navarro.
Paramount Pictures’ Scream hits the screen next weekend on January 14, 2022.
