Gamers are always in need of more storage and Western Digital is prepared to deliver with its newly announced solutions at CES, one of which is a SanDisk SSD that looks like the Fortnite banana, ‘Peely.’
If you’re a diehard Fortnite fan, then you’re probably going to want this SSD to add it to your setup. Not only does it evoke the goofiness that has become Epic’s game, but it’s also bright yellow. So it’ll probably be pretty hard to miss if you happen to lose it somewhere around the house. Or anywhere that you might misplace something like this. If you want something a little smaller in stature, there’s also a new Fortnite Peely Edition USB flash drive. These are limited edition as well, so there’s no telling if stock will last long.
Either should suffice for game storage with fast enough read and write speeds. That being said, the portable SSD is going to have a much faster sequential read speed. So if you want to cut down on file transfers and load times as much as possible, the portable SSD is what you want to go with. For comparison, the flash drive has a sequential read speed of 130MB/s. Meanwhile, the portable SSD has a sequential read speed of 800MB/s. There’s also the matter of storage capacity and cost.
The SanDisk Fortnite Peely Edition SSD comes with up to 2TB of storage space
Games these days aren’t small when it comes to file sizes. Sure, there are plenty of games out there that won’t take up a bunch of space. However, some of the most popular games these days are huge. Fortnite might only take up about 25GB. But games like Call of Duty take up a lot more. Well over 100GB if you install everything from the latest version of the game. The point is, that the flash drive might not be the best choice for game storage if you play games that take up a lot of space.
Still, there is the matter of cost. The flash drive is much less expensive with a starting price of $11.99 for 64GB. If 64GB isn’t enough, you can bump up to 128GB for $15.99 or 256GB for $26.99. All of those prices are fairly reasonable. If you absolutely need or want more storage than that, the 1TB portable SSD retails for $99.99 while the 2TB model is $149.99. The 1TB model is also currently on sale for $89.99 as a launch discount.
There are new storage options for content creators too
Gaming and content creation tend to go hand-in-hand for a lot of creators. But just because you play games, it doesn’t mean you want your games and your content creation files on the same drive. It’s probably best to separate them onto their own devices. SanDisk has content creators covered with its newly announced Creator Phone SSD. It’s a small square puck that comes in 1TB and 2TB storage capacity options, so there’s plenty of room for all of your videos and photos.
More importantly, it’s MagSafe-compatible. So you can stick it to the back of your iPhone, making it harder to lose. It should also easily work with Android devices that have a MagSafe-compatible case on them. There’s no confirmed price for these yet, but you can inquire about a purchase through the SanDisk website.
