Samsung has announced that it has raised more than $10 million through its Global Goals app. The company reached this milestone just over three years after the app’s launch. The funds go to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Samsung raises $10 million through its Global Goals app

Global Goals, aka the Sustainable Development Goals, is a United Nations (UN) initiative established in 2015. It aims to address 17 “pressing global challenges” such as poverty, inequality, education, health care, climate change, environmental degradation, and peace and justice by 2030. The initiative encourages and facilitates all 193 UN members to collaborate and collectively act against these issues and make the world a better place.

Samsung joined this fight in 2019. It partnered with the UNDP to launch the Samsung Global Goals app for its Galaxy devices. The app debuted on the Galaxy Note 10 series in August 2019 and was later made available for other models through the Google Play Store and the Galaxy Store. It has since expanded the app to Galaxy tablets and smartwatches as well. As of today, the app is installed on nearly 300 million Galaxy devices worldwide.

The Global Goals app lets Galaxy users donate money for any of the 17 objectives that are part of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. You can donate as little as $1 on this app, with all the proceeds going to the UNDP. If you can’t make monetary contributions, you can watch ads to raise funds. The app also supports wallpaper ads, thus helping in more ways. On top of this, Samsung matches ad revenue through this app up to $5 million annually. If you contribute $1 in ad revenue, the company will contribute another $1.

A year after the app’s launch, Samsung announced that it has raised $1 million for the Global Goals initiative. Two years later, the contributions have ballooned to $10 million. “We want to extend our gratitude to our users for making this incredible milestone possible,” said TM Roh, President of the company’s mobile business in an official press release.

Samsung is doubling down on its efforts to support the UNDP

Since launching the Global Goals app in 2019, Samsung has expanded its partnership with the UNDP to support its global causes. It has teamed up with the UNDP for the Generation17 initiative as well. This initiative promotes young voices “making meaningful impacts in their communities around the world”. The company also supports the initiative through its business operations. For example, it has launched a Global Goals band for the Galaxy Watch 5.

“As we approach the halfway point of the 2030 deadline, this coming year is crucial in our pursuit to advance the Global Goals,” said UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner. “While the world has faced recent setbacks, we are energized by the progress made through this partnership. Together with Samsung, we must reinvigorate our combined efforts to achieve the Goals and inspire the next generation to take action with us.”
