It is not exactly surprising that Samsung leads the foldable smartphone market. Still, the sheer numbers of its dominance may surprise you. Samsung was the undisputed king of the foldable smartphone market in 2021.

This information comes from Ross Young, a display analyst, and it is based on information from the Display Supply Chain. He basically shared some information from the upcoming report.

Samsung was basically the king of foldable smartphone market in 2021

According to Mr. Young, Samsung actually held 88-percent of the foldable smartphone shipments in 2021. It even increased its numbers from 2020, despite the fact there was more competition last year. In 2020, the company stood at 86-percent.

Samsung manufactured two of the best-selling foldable smartphone models last year, and four out of the top five. It wasn’t revealed what those models were, but we’ll guess the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3.

The Display Supply Chain will publish the full report in the near future, so we’ll get even more information regarding this. More and more OEMs are releasing foldables these days, so the competition will surely increase.

Unfortunately, some Chinese OEMs who released their foldable devices are keeping them limited to China. OPPO came up with a really great foldable, the Find N, but it’s still not available globally. The same goes for the HONOR Magic V, HONOR’s Galaxy Z Fold 3 competitor.

Xiaomi, Google, Huawei, Vivo, OPPO, and more companies plan on releasing foldables in 2022

Even Huawei Mate X2 is not exactly readily available (though the Huawei P50 Pocket did launch outside of China recently), while the Xiaomi Mi MIX Fold is still limited to China. Xiaomi, Vivo, OPPO, Google, Huawei, and more companies are expected to introduce their foldables in 2022.

Let’s hope that more foldable smartphones will be on offer on a global scale. Samsung really does need some competition in that segment, as the numbers we talked about clearly suggest. Samsung is also planning to release new foldables this year, of course, most likely in the second half of the year.
