Samsung is under investigation in the US for defective refrigerators. The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission recently launched the investigation after hundreds of complaints from users across the country. The Commission is looking to determine if Samsung refrigerators have any manufacturing defect that poses a safety risk.
According to USA Today, Samsung customers have been complaining about various problems with their refrigerators in recent months. Reported issues include malfunctioning ice makers, over-freezing, water leakages, fire hazards, and food spoilage. Many customers have reported that refrigerators are running above the normal temperature range in which food can be stored safely. This spoils the food, causing various stomach-related ailments.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission hasn’t issued any warning or recall notice to Samsung yet. But it confirmed that an investigation is ongoing and that it can’t share more details at this time. Hopefully, if there’s some major problem, it wouldn’t be too late to let customers know.
Samsung, meanwhile, defended the quality of its products. “Millions of consumers across the United States enjoy and rely on their Samsung refrigerators each day. We stand behind the quality, innovation, and performance of our appliances, as well as our industry-recognized customer support,” the company said in a statement. “Since our request for specific customer details was declined here, we are unable to comment further on any specific experiences referenced.”
Three out of every four complaints are from Samsung customers
According to the new report, the Consumer Product Safety Commission received 471 safety complaints related to refrigerators between January and July this year. That’s already the highest-ever yearly figure even if we are only counting for seven months. The number of complaints received till July 2022 is five times higher than the full-year total from just three years ago.
This massive spike in refrigerator-related safety complaints may be because of some manufacturing defects in Samsung products. More than three out of every four (over 75 percent) complaints filed since 2020 are reportedly from Samsung customers. This isn’t too pleasing and sounds like a pretty serious issue. In fact, a Facebook group hints at the scale of this problem. The group has more than 1000,000 members mostly complaining about faulty Samsung refrigerators.
Many of those have reportedly filed lawsuits in local courts against Samsung and also joined forces on multiple class-action lawsuits. We will have to wait and see if the Korean firm has messed up anything big time.
