Samsung has announced a major new update for its free ad-supported video streaming service, Samsung TV Plus. The company is adding new channels and features to give viewers more content to watch. This update will roll out to users later this year through early 2024.

Samsung TV Plus gets more content as viewership grows globally

Launched in 2015, Samsung TV Plus is a free video-on-demand service for its customers. The service is available on Samsung Smart TVs, Galaxy phones, tablets, Smart Monitors, Family Hub refrigerators, and on the web. Following a limited early release, it has now reached 24 countries around the world, with over 535 million supported devices.

According to the company, Samsung TV Plus boasts over 300 channels in the US and 2,400 channels globally, spanning news, sports, entertainment, music, and more. Thanks to a vast content library, Samsung customers are increasingly leaning towards it. The service has seen a staggering 60 percent year-on-year (YoY) growth in viewership globally over the past 12 months.

The Korean firm is now doing more on its part to improve the Samsung TV Plus experience for viewers. It is rolling out version 5.2 of the service to enhance content discovery, while simultaneously adding more features and content. The updated home screen brings a dedicated section for kids, housing “Best of Kids” programming from more than 20 family-safe channels, kids shows, and movies.

Blippi, Barney and Friends, Baby Einstein, Teletubbies, Caillou, The Adventures of Super Mario Bros 3, Sonic the Hedgehog, PBS KIDS, Strawberry Shortcake, Slugterra, Moonbug, Ryan and Friends, LEGO Channel, and Kidoodle.TV are some of the names Samsung mentioned in its press release. You should find plenty more content for your kids in the new section.

Alongside a kids section, Samsung TV Plus is gaining a dedicated music destination too. It boasts more than 40 channels and 200 playlists from music distribution services like Vevo, XITE, and Stingray. Samsung has created playlists based on genre, decades, artists, and more. The idea is to cater to a wide range of music tastes, offering something to everyone.

The Movie Hub is getting bigger

The Movie Hub is one of the most-loved features of Samsung TV Plus. It is a one-stop solution for all types of movie watchers. The company is expanding it with new channels and titles, including Movie Hub West, Movie Hub Action, and Movie Hub Holidays. “The new Movie Hub channels will continue to deliver thousands of live and on-demand blockbuster movies,” Samsung says, with “more to come.”

Additionally, the Korean firm is expanding its news offerings globally. Samsung TV Plus already offers one of the most comprehensive news destinations with partnerships with major news networks and channels, including ABC, CBS, CNN, FOX, NBC, Bloomberg TV+, Sky News, Scripps News, Cheddar News, USA TODAY, and Yahoo Finance. The company says it is expanding into multilingual and multicultural news and entertainment.

The efforts have brought ten Spanish-language channels to the service. You can now watch Spanish channels from ViX, TelevisaUnivision’s global streaming service, Ebony TV by Lionsgate, and more. These channels feature movies and shows like The Great Debaters, Snitch, Dear White People, I Can Do Bad All by Myself, Are We There Yet?, and Kevin Hart: What the Fit.

These updates are now rolling out to Samsung Smart TV models launched between 2019 and 2023. Samsung TV Plus users on other devices will get the new features and content in the coming months. “We are thrilled to present our catalog of free premium content from the world’s top creators in our new user experience, designed to enable the seamless discovery of the hundreds of channels and thousands of on-demand movies and TV shows available on Samsung TV Plus,” said Salek Brodsky, SVP and GM, Samsung TV Plus.
