The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has recently listed some of the new patents filed by Samsung for a double-folding smartphone. The design of this new foldable phone is different from the company’s current Z Fold and Z Flip as it comes with a double folding display.

As per the images, Samsung’s new foldable smartphone has three parts that ditch from each other and form a tablet-like device. The main difference between this device with the current foldable phones is that it has one new folding layer to add more space for users. A few days ago, more details about this phone leaked by tipsters.

It seems that Samsung decided to put a USB-C port on a bridge of sorts for charging ports. This is what we currently see at Huawei Mate X foldable smartphones. Moreover, the camera seems to follow a folding pattern extending out of the phone or flipping outward as the primary camera. In the patent image, three lenses have appeared at the camera. However, Samsung may change this formation.

Double folding smartphones are the future

Innovation competition between companies has intensified, and every company is trying to offer something beyond the current market products. It seems that we are witnessing a new trend in foldable phones, and in the next few years, the number of screens of these phones may even exceed three.

However, Samsung is not the only company working on double folding smartphones. Microsoft has also recently filed a patent for a similar phone. Microsoft has been very conservative about its double folding device, and we don’t have much information about it right now. Anyway, a double folding device would be significant and exciting upgrade to Surface Dou 2.

The durability of foldable smartphones is the subject of much debate. Adding a new display layer may be fun, but it also adds a lot of complexity to the design. These types of phones may open tens of thousands of times during their lifetime, and the hinges must be able to withstand this amount of pressure.

More news about Samsung and Microsoft double folding devices will be on the way in the coming months. Stay tuned.
