Samsung tends to patent all sorts of interesting smartphone designs. Just because that happens, doesn’t mean that those phones will come to life, though. Samsung just patented another interesting, multi-folding smartphone, though.

Samsung patented yet another interesting multi-folding smartphone

This has been spotted by Letsgodigital. This new smartphone design shows us a folding phone, which folds several times. It’s quite different than most other designs we’ve seen, though. Why? Well, it’s hinged on both horizontal and vertical axis.

The device can fold outwards only vertically, while the display folds inwards when you fold it horizontally. That was, the phone does stay well protected when you carry it with you, well, its display does.

So, it seems like you have to fold it vertically first, and then horizontally, that’s how this seems to work. It’s a rather odd concept, and you’ll need to check out the image below in order to get a better understanding of it.

The device is quite compact when fully folded

So, it seems like the device will fold to a really compact form factor after those two folds. The thing is, it will also be quite thick at the same time, that’s what double fold will do to a phone.

You’ll notice that this sample device actually has three cameras on the back, rather thin bezels, and a display camera hole on its display. That camera hole is moved to the right side, but not the right corner.

Right above the camera hole sits an earpiece. This phone is designed in a way that you can use it even after the first fold. In that version, it will be like a regular smartphone, basically, that’s why the front camera and earpiece are in that spot.

There is no secondary display on this device, which is to be expected, as it folds in two different directions. This patent was submitted on July 13, 2021, with the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization), but it was published on February 10.
