Samsung has rebranded the Samsung Free app to Samsung News in the US, giving it a visual and functional makeover. The updated app will let users enjoy “an everyday news experience in one convenient place”. The change started rolling out to select Galaxy phones yesterday and will reach all addressable devices in the coming weeks.

Samsung News is a standalone app that can also be accessed by swiping left on your Galaxy phone’s homescreen. It is the Korean firm’s alternative to Google Discover that sits on the leftmost homescreen on all Android devices. But it can be disabled. Originally called Samsung Daily, the company renamed the service to Samsung Free in 2020. It has now rebranded the service to Samsung News.

It isn’t just a name change, though. Samsung says the app will serve as a one-stop hub for all of your daily news needs. The app will deliver news briefings twice a day (Morning and Evening), bringing you the top headlines of the day. The company says a team of experienced news editors will curate these briefings to ensure you get what you like the most.

The app’s news feed will be easily accessible and will give you a categorized feed of news from Samsung’s partners. You can even follow publishers and get the latest stories from them in the “Following” tab. The Samsung News app will also provide you with news and entertainment podcasts from your favorite artists and publishers. You can listen to those podcasts directly within the app.

Samsung News will bring you the latest stories from over 20 news publishers

As far as news partners are concerned, Samsung says Samsung News will initially bring you the latest stories from Bloomberg Media, CNN, Fortune, Fox News, Glamour, GQ, HuffPost, Money, Newsweek, New York Post, Parade, POLITICO, Refinery29, Reuters, Salon, Slate, Sports Illustrated, The Daily Beast, TheStreet, USA TODAY, and Vice. The company plans to add more news sources over time.

“We created Samsung News to deliver breaking and premium news to Galaxy users in an easy-to-access format. Our goal is to support users by letting them curate their ideal news experience,” said Avner Ronen, VP of Product Development at Samsung. If you’re using a Samsung smartphone in the US, the updated app should show up for you within the next few days. As said earlier, you can swipe left of your homescreen to access Samsung News.
