The technology market research firm Counterpoint has released its latest report regarding the state of the smartphone market in the US. The firm suggests that the US smartphone market witnessed a five percent year-on-year (YoY) increase in sales during July 2024. Notably, Samsung and Motorola were amongst the biggest contributors to the overall sales during the period.
Furthermore, the report claims while the iPhone sales were slightly down, Apple was the top smartphone maker in the US in July.
Samsung and Motorola drove US smartphone sales in July 2024
According to Counterpoint, the US smartphone sales in July were mainly driven by two players – Samsung and Motorola. Samsung’s overall sales increased by almost a quarter year-on-year. The company’s US smartphone market share rose to 28 percent. The South Korean tech giant’s shipments in the region rose 23 percent from July 2023 to July 2024.
The strong sales of the budget Galaxy A15 5G contributed to Samsung’s growth in the US. Notably, the affordable phone accounted for nearly one-third of the brand’s total sales in the states. The company’s latest foldable smartphones – the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 – also contributed to the hike in sales.
As for Motorola, the brand benefited from the “prepaid consolidation” of brands across channels, suggests the report. The company’s US market share grew by 42 percent year on year. The share rose to 28 percent in July 2024 from 24 percent during the same period last year. Notably, the brand also benefited from various promotions like the $1 downpayment for the Razr+ 2024.
Apple led the US smartphone sales with a 49 percent market share
Apple’s market share in the US market dropped by four percent year-on-year. However, the Cupertino tech giant still led the US smartphone market by grabbing a massive 49 percent share. The report suggests that Apple’s sales were down due to low upgrade rates. However, the sales of the iPhone 15 Pro model were strong in July 2024.
Furthermore, the Counterpoint report added that the US smartphone market could see a resurgence in the premium segment. Sales of premium devices are expected to be driven by the growing interest in generative AI-powered smartphones.
