During the Galaxy S23 launch earlier this month, Samsung announced that it is “building the next XR experience” in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm. The company teased a new XR (Extended Reality) device but didn’t share many details. It appears the headset will arrive soon as Galaxy Glasses. That’s based on a recent trademark application from the Korean behemoth. The firm has also applied for a trademark for Galaxy Ring.

Samsung filed these trademark applications with the Korea Intellectual Property Rights Information Service (KIPRIS) last week (via). The documents supplied by the company describe Galaxy Glasses as a “headset for virtual reality experience,” “headset for augmented reality experience,” “smart glasses,” “smartphone,” and “headphone”. In other words, it’s a pair of XR glasses or headset with built-in smartphone and headphone-like capabilities. It may deliver stand-alone XR experiences encompassing virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and everything in between.

At the Galaxy Unpacked event on February 1, Samsung said that its upcoming XR headset will use a specialized Qualcomm processor and run on an optimized version of Android that Google specifically developed for wearable devices. Meta and Microsoft are also reportedly helping the Korean firm in the development of this product. Samsung seemingly taking inputs from all the industry experts to ensure that the Galaxy Glasses don’t have the same fate as its previous AR/VR efforts. The company shut down its Gear VR lineup a few years back after failing to gain much traction in the market.

Samsung is also readying a smart Galaxy Ring

Samsung’s Galaxy Ring is a “smart device for measuring health indicators and/or sleep in the form of a ring”. It can also communicate with your smartphone for sharing health information and other data. While the listing on the KIPRIS website didn’t reveal anything else, we have heard about the Galaxy Ring in the past as well. The Korean media reported in October last year that Samsung has begun work on its first-gen smart ring. There also have been multiple patents related to a smart ring product.

Along with serving as a health tracker, the company also reportedly plans to make the ring capable of controlling other connected devices. While details are still scarce, this trademark application and Samsung’s description of the product suggest the first-gen Galaxy Ring will be a fairly comprehensive smart ring. The Korean behemoth seemingly doesn’t want to release a gimmicky product. It is making something that ticks most of the boxes. We should hear more about this futuristic wearable device in the coming months.
