Samsung launched its Galaxy S23 series flagship smartphones a couple of days back with some notable upgrades over last year’s Galaxy S22. The company is now hoping these upgrades will help drive sales. It has reportedly set an ambitious target of increasing sales by at least ten percent this year.

When Samsung launched the Galaxy S22 series in February last year, the company was aiming to sell about 30 million units of the three models combined. However, 2022 was a difficult year for the smartphone industry. Sales declined globally, and the world’s No. 1 vendor wasn’t immune to it. The firm remained at the top, but it also suffered a decline. As such, it fell short of the target. 11 months into the Galaxy S22 launch, the company sold about 24 million units combined.

This year, Samsung is expecting the sales figure of the Galaxy S23 trio to cross 26 million, and potentially reach 30 million. The company’s head of mobile business TM Roh shared the internal target with Korean journalists during a press conference shortly after Wednesday’s Galaxy Unpacked event. TM Roh was on stage at the event in San Fransisco to unveil the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy Book 3. He said that sales of its upcoming foldables will also grow at the same rate.

“Global annual sales of both the Galaxy S series and foldable series will grow by double digits compared to last year,” Roh said. “The initial response from global customers is very good, with Verizon, the largest mobile carrier in the US, promising much better sales than last year,” he added (via). If Samsung achieves these targets, it would be a major success for the company. Analysts don’t expect the market’s condition to improve much this year, so any growth in sales would be huge.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra should be the crowd favorite

Samsung’s most-expensive Galaxy S phone has been the best-selling model in the lineup in recent years. That likely won’t change this year. The Galaxy S23 Ultra should once again be the crowd favorite. The company expects it to account for about 50 percent of overall Galaxy S23 sales. The Galaxy S22 Ultra made up about 40% of the total Galaxy S22 sales last year. The new Ultra is even better, with a 200MP primary camera and a host of other upgrades.

Samsung aiming for double-digit sales growth for the Galaxy S23 flagships and upcoming foldables (it will launch the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 in the second half of 2022) despite a global slowdown in the market tells you its business strategy this year. The company is prioritizing premium products, which have higher profit margins, rather than driving sales volume with a flurry of low-cost models. It now remains to be seen whether the Korean behemoth achieves its Galaxy S23 sales target.
