The Galaxy Z Fold 6 is the latest flagship book-style foldable from Samsung. This smartphone arrived alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and several other products during the company’s second Unpacked event of 2024. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 is not a huge revamp in basically any way. The design is very similar to last year’s model. The phone did get a spec bump, but not a huge spec bump, in all honesty. The phone’s cameras remained the same, and the same goes for the battery capacity and charging, just to name a few. There’s still plenty to talk about here, though, of course. This is, after all, the flagship foldable from one of the best-known tech companies in the world, so… let’s get down to it, starting with the phone’s specifications.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 specs

First and foremost, the SoC. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 will be fueled by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy SoC. That is basically an overclocked variant of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. In addition to that, the company included 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM here, and 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB of UFS 4.0 flash storage. Do note that the storage count could vary from one market to the next, though. One thing is for sure, it’s not expandable.

The main display on the phone measures 7.6 inches, and it’s a Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel. Its refresh rate goes up to 120Hz, and the resolution here is 1856 x 2160. The cover display on the phone measures 6.3 inches. That is also a Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel, and it offers a 120Hz refresh rate. This panel offers a fullHD+ (2376 x 968) resolution. The battery capacity remains unchanged, it’s still a 4,400mAh battery. The same goes for charging, you’re getting 25W wired, 15W wireless, and 4.5W reverse wireless charging here.

Camera hardware remains unchanged

There are three cameras on the back of the Galaxy Z Fold 6. Each of the phone’s displays has its own camera too, though. A 50-megapixel main camera (f/1.8 aperture, OIS) sits on the back. It is backed by a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera (f/2.2 aperture, 123-degree FoV), and a 10-megapixel telephoto camera (3x optical zoom, 30x digital zoom). The main display has a 4-megapixel under-display camera, while the cover display includes a 10-megapixel selfie camera.

Samsung’s new flagship foldable is IP48 certified for water and dust resistance. The device offers two SIM card slots, and it ships with Android 14 out of the box. On top of it, you’ll find Samsung’s One UI 6.1.1 skin. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 supports Bluetooth 5.3, while it weighs 239 grams. When unfolded, it measures 153.5 x 132.6 x 5.6mm. When folded, it measures 153.5 x 68.1 x 12.1mm.

What new upgrades does the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 have over the Galaxy Z Flip 5?

So, what’s new with the Galaxy Z Fold 6? What are its main selling features, and what improvements does it offer over its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold 5? Truth be said, these two phones are very similar, many would say even too similar. Samsung didn’t really upgrade the device all around. Still, there are some improvements so… read on.

It’s wider… finally!

This is the first thing that always comes to my mind when it comes to the Galaxy Z Fold 6. Many users have been asking for this change, as it makes the cover display on the phone more usable. It was way too narrow before. Well… Samsung listened, to a degree. The 23.1:9 aspect ratio is a thing of the past, OnePlus is switching to a 22.1:9 aspect ratio. This is still not ideal, though, as some of its competitors feature even more standard display aspect ratios. This is an improvement, though. Typing on the cover display should be easier now, that’s for sure.

Power boost

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 is a more powerful smartphone than its predecessor, of course. This is expected as it comes with a new processor. That’s also the main benefit here, as the RAM count and variation stayed the same, and the same goes for storage, both use UFS 4.0 storage. The new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy SoC is included here, however. That’s an overclocked variant of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, basically. This is Qualcomm’s most powerful SoC at the moment.

Samsung trimmed the fat

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 is a lighter device than its predecessor. Considerably lighter, actually. The phone weighs 239 grams compared to 253 grams of the Galaxy Z Fold 5. It’s still not as light as some of its competition, but this is much closer to a regular, large smartphone… and that’s na achievement, for sure.

AI is everywhere

AI is the buzzword these days, and Samsung actually does offer a number of useful AI features, which are included in this phone. They’re a part of One UI 6.1.1, and a part of Samsung’s ‘Galaxy AI’ suite. Note Assist is a good example. It’s a part of Samsung Notes and offers translation, summaries, and auto-formatting. Composer is another great example. It’s a part of Samsung Keyboard, and it generates suggested text based on “simple keywords” for email and social media apps. The last example we’ll make is Smart select. It basically expands the S Pen usability by suggesting features like translation, adding notes, and more.

Google AI partnership

In addition to features that Galaxy AI brings to the table, Google also leveraged its long-standing partnership with Google. The Google Gemini app does come pre-installed on the phone, and you’re getting the benefits of Gemini. On top of that, you’re getting some very useful features such as Circle to Search, which brings searching to a whole new level.

Should I buy the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6?

Some of you are probably wondering whether the Galaxy Z Fold 6 is worth it. Well, that all depends. Everyone has a personal preference, of course, but we can generalize a bit here, in order to try and help you make a decision. If you own the Galaxy Z Fold 5, well, you may as well stick with it. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 does not really reinvent the wheel in any way. It is a bit wider, and a bit more powerful, not to mention lighter. However, the battery capacity is the same, charging speeds are the same.

Samsung didn’t really upgrade the camera hardware either, and so on. It’s just too similar to its predecessor. If you’re owning an older Galaxy Z Fold phone, well, it may be more of a jump for you. Samsung also has some competition out in the market, and some of those phones arguably have more to offer than the Galaxy Z Fold 6. Ultimately, it’s up to you to make a decision, of course.
