This week, Google began the rollout of the first patch of the year for its Pixel devices. Now Samsung is doing the same, starting with its flagship models. The company is sending out the January 2025 security update to owners of the Galaxy S24 series. The Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Galaxy Z Fold 6 foldable phones are also receiving it in the US.
The Galaxy S25 series is just around the corner, but the Galaxy S24 devices still have at least 6 years of software support left. Android 15-based One UI 7 will be the next big update for these phones. Samsung could begin the stable rollout of the new firmware to its flagship smartphones in the coming weeks. In the meantime, the Galaxy S24 models are receiving fixes for several vulnerabilities. It is possible that this is the last patch before One UI 7 rolls out.
Samsung rolling out the January 2025 update to the Galaxy S24 series
As reported by SamMobile, the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra are getting the AXL1/3 firmware with the January 2025 security patch. Carrier-free units in South Korea and T-Mobile units in the US are receiving it first. It will likely reach carrier-free devices in the North American market in the coming days.
The January patch for Galaxy phones, still based on One UI 6.1.1, addresses a whopping 51 vulnerabilities. Google contributed 29 of the fixes to the Android core, with five of them being “Critical” severity. On the other hand, there are up to 22 fixed vulnerabilities in Galaxy hardware and software. The exploits allowed remote code execution and modification of notification settings, among other things. Samsung has not detailed how the vulnerabilities work to prevent their exploitation.
Users should receive a notification of the update’s availability once it’s ready to download on their devices. However, you can always try a manual check from Settings > Software update > Download and install. The Galaxy S24 lineup should be among the first to receive the long-awaited One UI 7 stable update. Samsung will offer more details about the rollout at the Unpacked event on January 22.
