Samsung’s announcement came soon after Google detailed the August 2024 security patch for Android devices.
Samsung has fixed several vulnerabilities in the August 2024 security patch update
Samsung has shared complete details of the August security patch on its website. The release mentions that the new patch will fix as many as 50 critical, high, and moderate security vulnerabilities. Samsung’s August security patch also fixes the “CVE-2024-36972” security issue. It’s worth pointing out that Google has confirmed this security vulnerability as a serious new zero-day threat affecting Android devices on the kernel level.
Out of the 50 security issues, Google has provided fixes for 35 for them. One of these is a critical vulnerability, while the other 34 have moderate severity. Samsung’s August security update contains 14 security fixes specific to Galaxy smartphones and tablets. The company has revealed that most of these 14 issues can provide intruders improper access to several system services. All of these security loopholes have been fixed in this patch.
The official changelog suggests that some of these vulnerabilities are related to improper control of “ExtControlDeviceService”, “KnoxService”, “libcode”, “Galaxy Watch”, and more. The complete details of fixes for all the vulnerabilities are listed on the company’s security update page.
The new security fixes will start reaching the flagship Samsung smartphones and tablets soon
As usual, Samsung will soon start rolling out the Android August security patch update to its flagship smartphones and tablets. Most recently launched devices will receive the patch in the same month, while others will be on a slower schedule. Last month, Samsung confirmed that the August 2024 security update is going to be very critical for its millions of Android devices.
In related news, Samsung has delayed the roll out of the Android 15-based One UI 7.0 beta update. The update was supposed to start reaching compatible devices by the end of July. There are reports that the firmware is still buggy and quite unstable. The company is ironing out all these problems to release the update soon. In the meantime, the brand is focusing towards releasing the One UI 6.1.1 update to more devices.
