Samsung may have just officially confirmed a rumor about the Galaxy Watch 5 series. We are talking about the rumors that there won’t be a Classic model this year. The company is replacing it with a Pro model.
Samsung yesterday released the first beta build of One UI Watch 4.5 for the Galaxy Watch 4 series. As part of this beta testing, the company also updated the companion Galaxy Wearable app as well as the Samsung Health app. The beta version 6.22.0.069 of the latter contained an interesting bit of information, though. First spotted by 9to5Google, the list of devices that this beta version is compatible with includes the Galaxy Watch 5 and the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. It doesn’t mention a Classic model.
This should mean the end of Classic branded Samsung smartwatches. More importantly, we could be bidding adieu to the Korean behemoth’s signatory rotating bezel. We were expecting the Pro model to feature it even if Samsung ditches the Classic branding. But recent rumors suggest the company is willing to sacrifice the much-loved bezel ring fr the sake of a bigger battery. The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is said to pack a gigantic 572mAh battery.
Hopefully, all other upgrades that the Galaxy Watch 5 series will bring, such as longer battery life and a more durable and stylish build, will make it easier for fans to forget the iconic rotating bezel.
Galaxy Watch 5 series will bring another name change
This revelation was likely unintentional. Samsung may have accidentally added the names of the two unreleased devices to the list. While we will never know that unless the names are pulled back, this more or less confirms that the Korean brand is making yet another change to the naming scheme of its smartwatches.
A few years back, Samsung’s smartwatches bore the Gear branding. The company switched to the Galaxy branding to bring all its mobile product lineup under the Galaxy umbrella. It then added the Active suffix to some models for a couple of generations. Last year, it dropped that name too and launched the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic. This year, it is seemingly doing away with the Classic branding in favor of Pro.
The Galaxy Watch 5 series is still more than two months away. The new wearables aren’t expected to go official until August this year. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 should accompany the watches out of Samsung’s doors. We will keep you updated with any new information that emerges about these devices in the build-up to the launch.
