Rockstar Games reportedly wants to turn GTA VI into a big creator platform, with content creators making user-generated content for the upcoming title. This new UGC content would have a “Fortnite/Roblox-style” feel to it that would allow creators to modify the game, making entirely unique experiences for fans.
In its current state, GTA is already one of the biggest game franchises ever made. GTA V’s online component is still a highly popular game even without this sort of content. That being said, GTA VI has the potential to surpass its predecessor tenfold, and likely will. Rockstar’s ambition to tap into the metaverse could elevate to even greater heights. Giving creators and players not only a higher quantity of content to engage with but also several new ways to play the game.
It’s not entirely clear yet if Rockstar will actually implement this style of gameplay. However, it has been reported that the studio is looking into it with considerable interest.
Rockstar is already talking to creators about turning GTA VI into a creator platform
According to a report from Digiday (via Wccftech), Rockstar is already in talks with creators on this potential feature for the upcoming game. The studio is said to be talking with Fortnite and Roblox creators, as well as current GTA creators. Talks are “in the early stages” at the moment. So this kind of content within the GTA VI universe isn’t a guarantee.
Having said that, it is strongly believed that Rockstar wants to move in this direction. This is according to the Global Gaming and Esports Lead for Wavemaker Pete Basgen. Basgen states that “It is my firm belief that the reason that they purchased FiveM is exactly that — to spin up a metaversal universe of custom-built experiences, and potentially UGC items, with an attached UGC creator economy. It will essentially occupy that adult-enumerated space at the top of the ecosystem; there’s a very natural place there for people that graduate from Roblox and Minecraft.”
FiveM is a mod for GTA V that enables multiplayer gameplay on custom servers. And it could be a step toward enabling this kind of user-generated content in GTA VI. There are tons of mods for the platform. This includes custom vehicle engine sounds, remastered versions of the game, and much more.
This might be part of Rockstar’s plan to launch GTA VI on PC
Recently it was reported that GTA VI might be coming to PC sooner rather than later. It’s unclear if this is true or not. However, the belief comes from Corsair’s CEO, Andrew Paul. He spoke on the subject with investors during its most recent earnings call. The purchase of FiveM, as well as Rockstar’s recent discussions with content creators about potential UGC content for GTA VI, might be suggesting Rockstar’s plan to bring the game to PC early next year.
Mods aren’t generally something that’s available on a console. FiveM in particular is not available for the console versions of GTA V. And with Rockstar having acquired FiveM, it’s certainly possible that the studio is gearing up for a PC release of its next game. GTA VI isn’t expected to launch on consoles until this Fall. So an early 2026 release of the game could give the studio plenty of time to flesh out these ideas and get things up and running.
Time will tell if Rockstar takes this approach. If it does, it’s not hard to believe GTA VI becoming a massive platform for UGC. Given that GTA V is still one of the most-watched games on Twitch, GTA VI has loads of potential.
