Action movie superstar Liam Neeson stars in the first trailer for this year’s Retribution, an immersive ticking clock thriller that straps audiences in for a high-octane ride of redemption and revenge. Released courtesy of Lionsgate, Retribution finds Neeson once again demonstrating that particular set of skills he has acquired over a long career in the action movie biz, as he finds himself at the center of a life-threatening game of cat and mouse. Check out the first trailer for Retribution below.
“When a mysterious caller puts a bomb under his car seat, Matt Turner (Neeson) begins a high-speed chase across the city to complete a specific series of tasks,” the official synopsis for Retribution reads. “With his kids trapped in the back seat and a bomb that will explode if they get out of the car, a normal commute becomes a twisted game of life or death as Matt follows the stranger’s increasingly dangerous instructions in a race against time to save his family.”
Directed by Nimród Antal (Predators, Metallica: Through the Never) and written by Chris Salmanpour and Andrew Baldwin, Retribution is a remake of a 2015 Spanish flick titled El Desconcido, and should have fans remembering the thrills, spills, and explosions of the 1994 action movie hit, Speed.
Retribution stars Liam Neeson in the lead as the unassuming businessman who finds himself pushed to his limits. Neeson stars in the movie alongside Jack Champion (Avatar: The Way of Water), Lilly Aspell (Wonder Woman), Matthew Modine (The Dark Knight Rises, Stranger Things), Embeth Davidtz (The Morning Show), Arian Moayed (Succession), and Noma Dumezweni (The Little Mermaid).
Will Liam Neeson Ever Retire From Action Movies?
Neeson, who has seen a major career resurgence as an aged action hero (even starting a trend) since starring in Taken back in 2008, has been threatening to retire from the action movie genre for some time. “Oh, yeah. I think so. I’m 68 and a half. 69 this year. There’s a couple more I’m going to do this year — hopefully, COVID allowing us — there’s a couple in the pipeline and, then I think that will probably be it. Well, unless I’m on a Zimmer frame or something,” the actor said back in 2021.
But, if he does really plan to retire, you wouldn’t know it from looking at his upcoming projects. Alongside Retribution, Neeson will lead In the Land of Saints and Sinners, which finds the actor playing a retired assassin, and Thug, in which Neeson stars as a brooding aging gangster. And this is without even mentioning the other thrillers on the horizon such as The Riker’s Ghost, Charlie Johnson in the Flames, and Cold Storage.
Neeson will also reprise the role of ‘big-rig’ ice road driver Mike McCann in Ice Road 2: Road to the Sky, which finds Neeson embarking on another adventure behind the wheel. The sequel finds McCann honoring his late brother’s last wish and traveling to Nepal to scatter his ashes on Mt. Everest. While on a packed tour bus traversing the deadly 12,000 ft. terrain of the infamous Road to the Sky, Mike and his mountain guide encounter a group of Nepalese mercenaries and must fight not only to save themselves and the busload of innocent travelers, but also the local villagers’ homeland.
Retribution is scheduled to land in theaters on August 25, 2023.
