Showtime has given Ray Donovan fans something to shout about with the first trailer of the feature length Ray Donovan: The Movie. Fans were ready to start cracking skulls after the cliffhanger/cancellation of the fixer’s and family saga. Showtime has heeded the call, and the gang is back together to return to Boaton and face the past that has haunted the family for generations.
Showtime broke hearts around the world when Ray Donovan came to en end, being cancelled as the seventh season ended with a cliffhanger in January 2020. In February, Liev Schreiber reached out via Instagram, thanking fans for their supportm, with the words, “It’s hard to describe how amazing it feels to those of us in the Ray Donovan family who have been lucky enough to experience the overwhelming love and the support all of you have expressed for our show since the news that Ray would not return. What’s even more incredible is that it seems your voices have been heard. Too soon to say how or when, but with a little luck and your ongoing support, there will be more Ray Donovan. So to all the Donofans who got their bats out and beat the odds. Thank you.”
Ray Donovan, the film picks up where season seven left off, with Mickey in the wind and Ray determined to find and stop him before he can cause any more carnage. The film also weaves together the present-day fallout from the Donovan/Sullivan feud with Ray and Mickey’s origin story from 30 years ago. The film stars Liev Schreiber, Jon Voight, Kerris Dorsey, Eddie Marsan, Alan Alda, Dash Mihok and David Patrick Kelly.
The official synopsis reads, “A showdown decades in the making brings the Donovan family legacy full circle. As the events that made Ray who he is today finally come to light, the Donovans find themselves drawn back to Boston to face the past. Each of them struggles to overcome their violent upbringing, but destiny dies hard, and only their fierce love for each other keeps them in the fight. Whether they stand together or they go down swinging, one thing is certain – Ray doesn’t do loose ends..”
If you have somehow let the tv phenomenon slip past you, the series is described as such. “Set in the sprawling mecca of the rich and famous, Ray Donovan does the dirty work for LA’s top power players. The one-hour series stars Emmy and Golden Globe Award nominee Liev Schreiber in his first lead television role as the go-to guy who makes the problems of the city’s celebrities, superstar athletes, and business moguls disappear. This powerful drama unfolds when his father, played by Oscar winner Jon Voight, is unexpectedly released from prison, setting off a chain of events that shakes the Donovan family to its core.”
The set up sounds pretty straight forward, but things get complicated, then go off the rails quickly. Many a night, I have listened to debates from fans on the decisions, good and bad, made by a family who must rely on each other while simultaneously watcing their backs. If you are enjoying HBO’s Succession, jump on in to Ray Donovan; it will be right up your back-stabbing, dysfunctional family, power-hungry alley.
Watch the premiere on Friday, January 14 on Showtime.
