Films that cast actual twins may not be entirely unusual, but those that have an actor play the role of both is definitely more so. It takes truly exceptional talent to immerse yourself in not one but two characters simultaneously who are meant to think alike yet still be their own person. The latest actor to pull this off is Rachel Weisz who is starring in the reboot of David Cronenberg’s classic 1988 film Dead Ringers. Per a report from The Hollywood Reporter, on the eve of its premiere next month on Prime Video, a trailer has dropped giving us a firsthand look at this new six-part limited series that sees Weisz push the highest of limits in ways we’ve rarely seen her do throughout her career.
This reboot of psychological thriller Dead Ringers is being helmed by Alice Birch, who also serves as writer and co-executive producer alongside Stacy O’Neil, Megan Ellison, Sue Naegle, Ali Krug, James G. Robinson, David Robinson, Barbara Wall, Sean Durkin, Anne Carey, and Erica Kay. Among those starring the series are Rachel Weisz (Black Widow) as twins Elliot and Beverly Mantle, Michael Chernus (Werewolves Within), Poppy Liu (History of the World, Part II), Emily Meade (Trial By Fire), Jennean Farmer (The Good Nurse), Jeremy Shamos (The Big Sick), Jennifer Ehle (She Said), and John Wu (DMZ). Per the show’s official synopsis, the premise revolves around twin gynecologists Beverly and Elliot Mantle who are “twins who share everything: drugs, lovers and an unapologetic desire to do whatever it takes — including pushing the boundaries on medical ethics — in an effort to challenge antiquated practices and bring women’s health care to the forefront.”
Weisz Has Audiences and Her Patients Seeing Double
The trailer opens with both Beverly and Elliot Mantle (Rachel Weisz) who both work as gynecologists in the top of their field. They pride themselves on the work they accomplish and the much-needed guidance and medical help they provide their female patients, but it doesn’t seem to be enough for at least one of them. With the supposed “power of God” at their fingertips, they strive to innovate the way female birth is performed and how life is conceived. However, they find themselves continuously at odds with one another on how to accomplish those feats while potentially sacrificing the ethics and morality of their profession. To the tune of “Tainted Love” the series takes audiences down an eccentric rabbit hole while Weisz mesmerizes with her dual-performance that’s sure to put her on the map once again for a best actress award or two.
Dead Ringers is set to debut on Prime Video on April 21. The trailer for the series can be viewed below.
