Qualcomm has officially unveiled the Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 SoC (System on a Chip). It will enable 5G connectivity in entry-level and affordable Android smartphones.

Specifications and features of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 4s Gen 2

Qualcomm has launched a new chipset intended for entry-level Android smartphones. As the name suggests, the 4s Gen 2 is essentially a slightly improved variant of the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 chipset that launched last year.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 was limited to 4G, but the 4s Gen 2 has a 5G Modem-RF System. This modem ensures smartphones with the new chipset can latch on to 5G bands, unlocking near gigabit speeds.

Qualcomm is manufacturing the new chipset on Samsung 4nm 4LPX process technology. Aimed at budget devices, this SoC isn’t a powerhouse. The octa-core chipset packs 2 Kyro Performance cores clocked at 2.0GHz. The rest of the six Efficiency cores are clocked at 1.8GHz.

Smartphones with the new chipset can support dual 16MP cameras or a single 32MP camera. Devices in the affordable range usually feature HD+ screens. But this chipset can support a Full HD+ display.

The new SoC is quite similar to the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 SoC. It supports LPDDR4X memory, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.1 USB 3.2 Gen 1, USB-C, and Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 4+ technology

When will entry-level Android smartphones get the new 5G chipset?

Qualcomm has officially announced the new SoC. However, the company must have sent this SoC out to smartphone manufacturers.

Speaking about the new SoC, Chris Patrick, senior vice president and general manager of mobile handsets, at Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. said, “The Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 Mobile Platform is a significant leap forward in making 5G technology more accessible, so more people can navigate the world at 5G speeds. Thanks to cutting-edge engineering, we balanced affordability with reliability, offering strong performance with all-day battery life, integrated AI, and widespread access to 5G for more enhanced mobile experiences.”

Although device makers haven’t announced any smartphones packing the new SoC, buyers can expect them before this year ends. As for the pricing, some reports suggest, smartphones with this chipset could launch below the $100 mark.
