A trailer has been released for Puff: Wonders of the Reef. Previously known as Microworlds: Reef, the title is Netflix’s first Australian Original documentary. The doc is about a baby pufferfish who travels through a wondrous, microscopic world full of fantastical creatures as he searches for a home in the Great Barrier Reef. It is set to begin streaming on Netflix on Dec. 16, and ahead of the premiere, you can check out the official trailer below.
The official synopsis from Netflix reads, “Follow a baby puffer fish through a vibrant coral reef as he learns to survive and thrive through his first year of life – an extraordinary journey for a little fish that starts out smaller than a human fingernail. For the first time, scientists, cinematographers and documentary filmmakers have combined their skills to transport us into Puff’s tiny world – a world where drama unfolds on scales too fast, too slow, or too small for the human eye to perceive.”
Narrated by internationally-renowned Australian actress Rose Byrne, this is the story of the tiny, often overlooked creatures that live in one of Earth’s most diverse ecosystems, and the interconnectedness of life that links our world to theirs. Filmed in Australia on The Great Barrier Reef, the sophisticated super macro techniques specifically developed for the film will immerse viewers in the exquisite world on the reef’s tiny, weird, and wonderful inhabitants.
The doc is directed by Nick Robinson of Wild Pacific Media, creators behind award-winning documentary films, Australia’s Ocean Odyssey, Kakadu, and Life on the Reef. Cinematography is by Pete West of BioQuest Studios, world leaders in the most advanced technologies in underwater filmmaking and photography. Electra Manikakis, Nick Robinson, Peta Ayers, Pete West, Louise Polain, and Daniel Stoupin are producing.
Rose Byrne, the narrator of the doc, is an Australian actress who previously won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress for her role in The Goddess of 1967. She has since appeared in American movies like Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, Troy, 28 Weeks Later, Bridesmaids, and the X-Men movies, as well as starring on the thriller series Damages, which earned her nominations at the Emmys and the Golden Globes. More recently, she did voices for the Peter Rabbit movies and has been starring in the Apple TV+ series Physical, which debuted in June and was renewed for season 2.
“We [shot] the domestic storyline all together in one block, and by the end, I was having bad dreams,” Byrne said of shooting Physical, via Vanity Fair. “I was not sleeping well. It was starting to get under my skin. I love Rory Scovel; he couldn’t have been more of a delightful person to work with. But it’s a dysfunctional marriage, and it’s a dysfunctional place to be in it every day for 12 hours. I did find that hard to shake.”
Providing voiceover work for a charming documentary about a baby sea creature should be a good palette cleanser. Puff: Wonders of the Reef will start streaming on Netflix on Dec. 16, 2021.
