Sony’s PS5 Pro is set to receive a more advanced graphics upscaler in 2026, which is supposed to be in the style of AMD’s FSR 4. FSR 4, or Fidelity FX Super Resolution 4, is the upscaler technology used on AMD’s newest GPUs. Such as the Radeon RX 9070 and the Radeon RX 9070 XT.
Details about the new upscaler come straight from Mark Cerny, Lead Console Architect for Sony Interactive Entertainment. Cery recently spoke to Digital Foundry and said that the plan is to provide the PS5 Pro with a graphics upscaler that is similar to AMD’s FSR 4 technology. Cerny doesn’t say it will be as good or surpass what AMD has created for its latest GPUs. However, he does state that he believes the team can achieve a similar result.
“Our target is to have something very similar to FSR 4’s upscaler available on PS5 Pro for 2026 titles as the next evolution of PSSR,” Cerny says. PSSR, or PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, was announced as part of the PS5 Pro’s features. It allows the console to upscale in-game graphics to a higher resolution.
The FSR 4-style upscaler for PS5 Pro is being developed in parallel with PSSR for current titles
This new advanced upscaler should provide more of a reason for gamers to upgrade to the PS5 Pro. Gamers also shouldn’t expect to see the fruits of Sony’s labor in this regard until sometime next year. Cerny says that it’s been working on the tech in parallel with the current PSSR projects. As of right now, Sony has been focused on working with developers to incorporate PSSR into their games.
So 2025 will be all about getting PSSR to work in existing titles. This is in addition to future titles coming out later this year.
Implementing the new upscaler is “time-consuming”
According to Cerny, Sony’s method of implementing the new upscaler in the way that it has is time-consuming. This is why Sony is targeting next year for the rollout of the feature. Speaking about the work, Cerny says, “It should take the same inputs and produce essentially the same outputs. Doing that implementation is rather ambitious and time-consuming, which is why you haven’t already seen this new upscaler on PS5 Pro.”
While this leaves PS5 Pro gamers with quite a wait to see the end results, it’s exciting to know that it’s coming. At the very least, the PS5 Pro will be getting more games with PSSR integration this year.
