“When teenage Priscilla Beaulieu meets Elvis Presley at a party, the man who is already a meteoric rock-and-roll superstar becomes someone entirely unexpected in private moments: a thrilling crush, an ally in loneliness, a vulnerable best friend. Through Priscilla’s eyes, Sofia Coppola tells the unseen side of a great American myth in Elvis and Priscilla’s long courtship and turbulent marriage, from a German army base to his dream-world estate at Graceland, in this deeply felt and ravishingly detailed portrait of love, fantasy, and fame.”
Written and directed by Sofia Coppola, Priscilla is based on Priscilla Presley’s memoir Elvis and Me, which details Priscilla’s life from the moment she met Elvis, to their marriage in 1967, as well as the issues and personal drama that led to the couple divorcing in 1973.
Mare of Easttown and On the Basis of Sex star Cailee Spaeny leads the film as Priscilla Presley alongside Euphoria actor Jacob Elordi as Elvis Presley. The rest of the cast includes Dagmara Domińczyk, Raine Monroe Boland, Emily Mitchell, Jorja Cadence, Rodrigo Fernandez-Stoll, and Luke Humphrey.
Priscilla Has Been Met With Rave Reviews Following Debut at Venice
Following the film’s premiere at the 80th Venice International Film Festival last month, Priscilla has been met with rave reviews from critics. Many have applauded director Sofia Coppola’s handling of this real-life story, with Marlow Stern of Rolling Stone saying…
“People may fault Coppola for dipping her toe in familiar terrain, but it’s hard to argue with the result: a transportive, heartbreaking journey into the dark heart of celebrity, and her finest film since Lost in Translation.”
David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter meanwhile sums things up by concluding that Coppola has proven to be the perfect filmmaker to tell the story of Priscilla Presley.
“An impeccable union of director and subject.”
Variety’s Owen Gleiberman praised Coppola for telling the difficult story without fear or favor saying…
“The film ushers us right into Graceland (you really feel like you’re there), showing us what happened, just as it happened, without sweetener or frills.”
Finally, while Priscilla does not include any of Elvis’ music, David Ehrlich of indieWire actually felt that this helps the film rather than hinders.
That Elvis’ estate denied Coppola the rights to most of his music works to the advantage of a movie so keyed into how removed Priscilla felt from anything that was happening in her husband’s career.
Priscilla is scheduled to be released in the United States by A24 on November 3, 2023.
