Google‘s June 2023 update is now rolling out to the Pixel Watch. The new firmware build will be pushed to users in phases over the next few days. It should reach all eligible Pixel Watch units globally by the end of next week.
The official changelog supplied by Google doesn’t detail what the wearable is getting with this update. All it says is that the Pixel Watch is picking up “the latest security patches, bug fixes, and improvements”. Those “improvements” may be hiding a few things for you to find, though. After all, the June update is supposed to be a bigger quarterly release than the last two updates for the device.
Sure enough, the folks over at 9to5Google noticed that the Pixel Watch now uses larger font/numbers in the PIN pad. The change makes for bigger touch targets when entering your PIN for unlocking the device. Additionally, the background of the System updates page in Settings is now gray instead of black. It’s unclear why Google made this change, but as the publication points out, it emphasizes the wearable’s thicker bezels.
These are the only known changes the Pixel Watch is getting with the June update. Of course, that’s in addition to the latest security patches and bug fixes, which aren’t user-facing changes. But if you’ve received this update, don’t forget to watch out for more changes or goodies. There may not be many notable new features but Google may have made a few subtle improvements to the overall user experience.
Google has just started rolling out the June 2023 update for the Pixel Watch
If you haven’t received this update yet, fret not. Google notes that it could take a week or two for the OTA (over the air) release to reach all Pixel Watch units, depending on your region and carrier. You will get a notification once the update is available for you. Alternatively, you can open the Settings app on your watch and navigate to System > System updates to check for updates manually.
If this screen shows that “Your watch is up to date,” tap on the screen repeatedly in quick succession. This is an age-old trick that still works. It immediately triggers the update on your Pixel Watch. You can turn off Bluetooth to force the watch into a Wi-Fi connection, which will speed up the download process. The new build number for the Pixel Watch is RWDC.230605.004.
